I have to admit I used to be exactly like this. But then again at the time I had a job, and for it had to dress like Captain Nerd, so I could never feel comfortable walking around the town like that. :\

I've become so much more relaxed since then, lol.

What part of the world are you from?

When I was in Germany last summer (Heidelberg specifically) I loved leaving the madness of the student residence and chilling alone at outdoor cafes and watching all the crazy tourists and gypsies

Africa, geographically. Check my location.

It's funny how I love so much this island, yet I hate so much the only real "town" we have, half of its population seem to be arrogant wankers who think they're better than everyone else. I could never feel at home there.

I guess this is even worse in the big cities though. If a town that probably has 50000 people puts such delusions of greatness into their inhabitants, I wonder how people in London, Paris or New York think of themselves. I've heard of dutch people complaining of a similar phenomenon in Amsterdam.

But maybe this is all in my head.

I grew up in NYC and most people in there have no delusions. They are poor or lower middle class and just living life with big dreams. Perhaps the elites of the city will have these feelings but that can be said about the elites of any city.

haha that definitely depends on what NYC you're talking about. Where I live in williamsburg, kids are full of delusions.

I don't think economics really has anything to do with delusions though. It just comes down to the person - you have down to earth rich people and down to earth poor people.

as one who usually travels alone i know what you mean, thread starter

it doesn't bother me much,
i generally tend to cook for myself.
or just eat fruit.

but sometimes i go out to restaurants
and when i enter
'table for 1?'

YES TABLE FOR ONE BITCH!!!!

never fails.
and then certain people around me just stare.

but i am actually quite good at socializing,
and sooner or later i have someone to hangout with.
and next time i'm in that country, i have a friend waiting for me.
so yeah, take it as an opportunity to meet new people you would otherwise not meet if you were not alone. por decir...if you had someone to talk to, you would generally close out anyone else...so take the chance and meet new people. cheers m8

wtf are you on about? How is a persons involvement in an article any indication of their level of embarrassment of eating alone? I often indulge myself in some sort of reading material when eating, much more entertaining than observing your food for 20 minutes. Also, what's wrong w/ sending an sms while eating?

How you found a parallel between all of the above and embarrassment is beyond me.

I think the same issue also applies when you got the movies alone.

I've only gone to the movies alone 2 times (Matrix & Dark Knight), but I didn't think much of it at the time. Still both times I got these weird looks when I said "one ticket please".

The main problem I have with eating alone is boredom. There is only so much observing and taking in my surroundings I can do without being, what I think is, rude. Usually I bring a book or customize my Crackberry - something to focus my mind onto.

I can relate to this, when i lived in Europe eating out alone was something i dreaded sometimes, but there was a certain sense of freedom while doing so, very hard to explain.

I was also alot younger and alot more self-conscious than now.

Great comment. Interestingly, I've never gone to the movies alone, even though I find it less social than eating. The reason is a person can choose not to go to a movie as opposed to eating. I've gone to clubs, bars, and Loveparade alone too. Though it is easier to meet people at those places.
