unless it was someone they know I guess? there was a story recently where the guy protected his Mom from a thief with a knife, he might lose his thumb because of all the deep cuts he got in the process

^^ agreed. I had the same thought myself: "man if I were there I would have saved that guy's life by smashing that guys face in". The reality is I would have been scared shitless. And when we are faced with instinctual emotions like fear we act instinctualy and FLEE.

Really it's not about knowing what to do in this situation its about getting the heck out and making sure you and everyone else is safe.

And let us not worry the madman will get his the second he is put in with the general population in prison. Hopefully the courts don't pull a "Canada" and deem him insane or give him Bernardo like isolation.

yeah! or freeze...

I can only imagine a memeber of a SWAP team would have all the right instincts kicking in if one was present at the scene

Oh god, the article in the globe today was brutal. A mother behind the whole scene in the bus had to throw her baby to someone ahead, so she wouldn't have to take her baby past the man in the aisle.

I can't even imagine what it's like to be in that situation - it's shameful that people can cast judgement on how other passengers acted.

Greyhound did an excellent job of handling all of this - props to them. Many companies don't have a plan on how to act when a crisis happens.

Reminds me of the Kitty Genovese case.. (paging Sociology 101! :P)

38 people (so cited in the NY Times, but it may have been closer to approx. a dozen) witnessed Kitty Genovese murdered, but no one stepped in. This is now called the "bystander effect" and "responsibility diffusion". i.e. people are unwilling to step in if they don't see anyone else trying to help.

After this occurrence, there were a bunch of sociological experiments conducted to test the theory and found out that if ONE person steps in, then others will follow willingly. But it has to take that one person initially.. Otherwise people will keep their distance and remain afraid and unwilling to help.

The fucked thing about this is the fact that there going to charge him for second degree murder due to the fact it was comletely random.

correct me if i am wrong but second degree is a period of 10 - 25 years maximum. Obviously he will get the full period, but still...

that makes him 65 or so when he gets out

Hopefully someone will murder him right away.

Small Asian dude? The guy was described as about 6 feet and around 200 lbs with a hunting knife. Even if the guy was in the military he had no weapons to defend himself, and again he probably never had to use his CQC in real life situations. Especially a guy who's messed up in the head that would attack someone random and so calmly. Basic instinct would dictate that you get your ass out of there.
