LOL. what a farce. I hate when Dems try to take credit. They're still defensive to this day screaming all the time that Republicans are racists. Fact check time, Krypton.

What does the record say about Republicans and the battle for civil rights and specifically for the Civil Rights Act of 1964? Since 1933 Republicans had a more positive record on civil rights than the Democrats. In the 26 major civil rights votes after 1933, a majority of Democrats opposed civil rights legislation in over 80 percent of the votes. By contrast, the Republican majority favored civil rights in over 96 percent of the votes.

Remember that the Republicans were the minority party at the time. Nonetheless, it passed the House on Feb. 10, 1964. Of the 420 members who voted, 290 supported the civil rights bill and 130 opposed it. Republicans favored the bill 138 to 34 (80%-20%); Democrats supported it 152-96 (61%-39%). Republicans supported it in higher proportions than Democrats. Even though those Democrats were Southern segregationists, without Republicans the bill would have failed.

Don't forget about these scumbags:

Senator Robert Byrd, D-WV: Former member of the Ku Klux Klan and is currently the only national elected official with a history in the Klan. Byrd was extremely active in the Klan and rose to the rank of “Kleagle,” an official Klan membership recruiter. Byrd once stated that he joined the Klan because it was effective in "promoting traditional American values". One of the earliest criticisms of Byrd's Klan ties came in 1952 when he was running for Congress. Byrd responded by claiming that he had left the Klan in 1943 while noting that "(d)uring the nine years that have followed, I have never been interested in the Klan." Byrd was lying, however, as he engaged in correspondence with a Klan Imperial Wizard long after he claims to have ended his ties with the hate group.

Senator Ernest Hollings, D-SC: Hollings rose out of the Democrat Party's segregationist wing in the 1960's as governor of South Carolina. While in office as governor, Hollings personally led the opposition to lunch counter integration in his state. The New York Times reported on March 17, 1960 that then-governor Hollings "warned today that South Carolina would not permit 'explosive' manifestations in connection with Negro demands for lunch-counter services." Governor Hollings' support for segregation continued throughout his term and included his attendance at a July 23, 1961 meeting of segregationist Democrats to organize their opposition to the civil rights movement. Hollings was one of four governors in attendence, all of them Democrats. The others included rabid segregationists Orval Faubus of Arkansas and Ross Barnett of Mississippi. The New York Times reported on the meeting, noting that among the strategies discussed were using the segregationist White Citizens Council organization to mobilize political opposition to desegregation. In more recent years Hollings, a senior Democrat senator, has made disparaging racial remarks and slurs against minorities. Senator Hollings, who was a contender for his party's presidential nomination in 1984, blamed his defeat in the primaries by using a racial slur against Hispanics. After losing the Iowa Straw Poll, Hollings stated "You had wetbacks from California that came in here for Cranston," referring to one of his opponents, Alan Cranston. A few years later Hollings reportedly used the slur "darkies" to derogatorily refer to blacks. Hollings gained international criticism for his remarks about the African Delegation to the 1993 Geneva GATT conference, where he crudely remarked "you'd find these potentates from down in Africa, you know, rather than eating each other, they'd just come up and get a good square meal in Geneva."

Senator Richard Russell (D-GA): Launched a filibuster to prevent the passage of Civil Rights Act of 1964. Said Russell "We will resist to the bitter end any measure or any movement which would have a tendency to bring about social equality and intermingling and amalgamation of the races in our (Southern) states."

I'd say Barack is right on the money when he has the foresight to look beyond his wife's paycheck to realize we're headed in the wrong direction here.

Life is about more than personal wealth, and I think that's something you corporate republicans haven't realized.

I don't want that future for my children either.

You people don't even realize how good you have it. I know we have problems, but they aren't as fucking depressingly bleak as the Democrats make them out to be. But you soak it up like a sponge and let the paranoid fear of armageddon and anarchy at any minute cause you to think it's all true. I'm so sick of the constant doom and gloom negative pessimism and guilt that we are ruining everything and need to atone for our sins (by shelling out money to these causes of course). 16 years ago Al Gore said we had 10 years left. He's saying the same thing now. Relatively speaking, our lifetime is just a grain of sand from all the beaches in the world. Fucking chill out and enjoy yourself.

No no, you completely misunderstood my statement. I said 'LIBERALS', not Democrats. You are talking about parties. I did not.

I'm sorry this country's real problems aren't big enough for you personally to get up off your lazy ass to do something about it. Hell, just pass the buck to the future generations, what do you care? As long as you get a paycheck and don't have to foreclose on your house, life can't be that bad, eh? As long as your son isn't in Iraq dodging IED's for a cause that nobody can identify, life can't be that bad, eh? As long as you live in a public school district that isn't on the verge of failing, your kids have a perfect future, right? As long as unemployment doesn't reach 8% in your hometown, like it has in Chicago, there's no reason to worry about job security, is there? As long as you weren't the one sitting in traffic watching smoke rise over the Mississippi last August like I was, there's no reason to care about withering infrastructure, is there?

Yeah, fuck you and your "America is perfect and shouldn't be changed" bullshit. People like you are the reason this country is sliding backwards in the first place.

And the "shelling out money" line? Real fucking overplayed. You're a partisan Rush Limbaugh wannabe hack.

lol, who is it that thrives off scaring the American people with the "mushroom cloud" delusion. Or that the terrorists want to take away our freedoms. Or that Iran is threat to the United States??? Incompetent fools of the GOP, and even some democrats, I won't pick and choose here.

See, I'm going to work hard enough to provide better choices for my kids than public schools... the same thing anyone else has the power and opportunity to do. I also refuse to rely on programs and handouts like so many democrats do, therefore ensuring I control my job security and can live wherever I want. By the way, Democrats run Chicago. What's the unemployment rate in Republican run cities compared to that?

If Obama does not initiate high level negotiations with Iran, and start a plan to withdraw from Afghanistan along with Iraq, I will start to seriously question him. It's best to be an independent instead of subscribing to one party or the other. I think we need to elect more Dems to Congress so we can roll back the Republican abuses of power for the last 7 years.

So the Dem congress for the last 2 years is the measuring stick you are basing that on?? LOLOLOLOLOL!!!!! They have not accomplished anything. When Democrats first took control of Congress, its approval rating sat at 15%, which explained quite a bit about the electoral victory Democrats achieved. They managed to push it up to 26% after four monthsin charge, but it has gone downhill ever since May 2007. People used to joke about it hitting single digits, but the day has finally arrived according to a July 9th Rassmussen pole under the leadership of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. They make Bush's approval rating look solid!

You jump on Obama for nothing other than wanting a better future for his children and then you call me the hypocrite. You also call me presumptuous and then go on to make blanket statements about me. Your insinuation that all Democrats live on handouts and that anyone who loses their job does so because they "relied on the government" is naive and shows how out of touch with reality you really are. Don't act like your own success is a barometer for how everyone's experience in this country has been. That's great that you're grateful for your own opportunities. Open up your eyes and look around you. This country has turned a corner in the wrong direction (by the way - 81% of Americans agree with me --

They can't do anything because they lack the votes to do anything. They even held semi-impeachment hearings of the president, but of course, since their majority is so slim, they can't take it any further b/c the Republicans will protect their man in office no matter what gross violations of the law he's committed. I'm not basing anything on the last 2 years. I'm basing my opinion on the assertion that the Democrats need a super-majority to roll back the Republican policies of the last 7 years. And if they so choose to take our country into unjustified wars, then I'll oppose them too...
