No, to be fair I haven't seen him recently. Saw him twice in 2006, but not since then.
There are quite a lot of things that put me off seeing him though:
1. The people. I've noticed amongst his growing fanbase of the last few years that a lot of his fans seem to be absolute idiots. I guess you could say it's the same reason I don't go to watch Man United games at the pub anymore. I'm a Man U fan (originally from Manchester, but went to uni in Birmingham) and when I'm in a Birmingham pub for a game it's chock full of stupid glory supporters from Kensington who don't have a fucking clue about football. Really takes the enjoyment out of the experience. It's embarrassing. Even if I like the music he's playing, I also like the company of an informed audience and I don't think you get that with Tiesto.
2. His music. Come on, he's making some shit tunes now, remixes of Britney and Justin Timberlake. I know producing and DJing are separate fields, but does he honestly not play those tunes out? I bet he does.
3. His attitude. Tiesto seems to want everything to be really big and grandiose. Huge stages, elaborate production and lighting, vast amounts of people and his face plastered everywhere. I remember someone saying they'd bought a ticket for his gig at the O2 arena and there was a seat number on it. What the fuck, it's a dance event. People need to realise that less is more, particularly when it comes to going to raves. Sure, trance suits a big stage but there should be a limit. Tiesto, and some of the other top trance DJs, have violated that limit many times with concerts and fucking Disneyland. It's not what raving is about; in fact, it's the complete opposite. It's meant to be select and intimate, not glaring and obnoxious.
I'll probably see him again at a festival or something over the next few years; all I'm saying is that I don't have much of a desire to see him anymore BASED on those three factors mentioned above. Seems pretty reasonable to me, really. |
I agree.
1. its a real freaking nightmare to even try to go to any event there is more chances of being suffocated than enjoying the show.
2. they are indeed played out but actually the timberlake remix works well in a party, if you compare it to 95% of the EOL album.
3. because he's Maximahl!!!!!
(see privilege trailer @ tiesto.com)
"the wholeisland is going minimal what do you think?"
"i think i'm the total opposite, i'm hear to provide the trance, i'm Maximahl baby *cheesy grin*"

lol its MARKETING MARKETING MARKETING
when you ask random people to list 3 "techno" or trance DJs, if they even can name 3, they will say Tiesto.
if you ask them to name 1 song from him, they probably will be stumped. a bunch of people i know have Tiesto on their iPods just because its tiesto. all they probably wanted was some trance and went on limewire and searched "Tiesto" and clicked download as they went down the list of songs.
Tiesto is a household trance name, thats how good him and his team did at marketing the name and brand.

You are definately hitting the nail on the head there. I meet people, and we start talking about music, I ask them if they have heard of Paul van Dyk, they say "umm, no, Paul who" And then I mention Tiesto and they are like "Oh, yeah, DJ Tiesto!" -- this has happened more than a dozen times. Armin is usually foreign to them too. About the only two names that almost always ring a bell with people here are Oakenfold and Tiesto. Nobody knows about Sasha and Digweed, Carl Cox, etc....basically the only two names from the electronic genre that have instant recognition with a wide group (mostly people that don't listen to much electronic) are Tiesto and Oakie. At least that's what I have found.
Right, it's about marketing -- and when you hit the "mainsteam" with concerts, movie soundtracks, big name pop remixes, people worldwide learn to know you as an artist, or "hey, that techno DJ!" <-- LOL but that's the recognition they get, and I guess these guys like it, it's all about popularity from this point. But again, with those "in the know" look at the DJMag Poll and Armin is on top. Go figure.

Funny thing about everyone recognizing Tiesto and Oakie is that when I heard tiesto's mixes it reminded me of Oakie. They are very similar in their track selection and mixing style. Just ultimately smooth with great mood development and flow. (talking more about late 90s oakie) I first heard oakenfold in '97 with his GU Oslo CD. Blew my mind and changed the way I viewed trance. Saw him in '98 and in a real small club and danced my butt off. Somewhere around 99 he started to get huge and played some weird stuff. I sort of lost track of Dance music around 2002. Maybe a year ago I started listening to Pandora radio and started some dance stations and a bunch if tracks from Tiesto ISOS 5 came up so I bought it. I couldn't help but thinking, 'this is Oakie when he was good!'. I like tiesto. I like his tracks, I like his mixes. His superstardom doesn't change the fact that he's a good DJ IMO. Now I'm getting back into Dance music heavily again and Tiesto is still one of the best when it comes to melodic progressive house/trance.
What I possibly like most though is that he is consistent. I haven't heard a bad mix CD by him yet. Usually people going on as long as he has would have a couple whack mixes. But no he doesn't break the pattern of making pleasing mixes.

What he undoubtedly does is play for the crowd - - those gay arsed trancers are what all those cookie cutter drug enduced youths want at the party... and he happily throws out the latest Sean Tyas production after Discover production after Anjuna track... to please them.
He must be sick to death of hearing Adagio and Lethal by now, but he still relentlessly drops those too, to cater for the other corner of his fanbase who only know him through itunes and his albums.
Then there is the small minority of people like me, who were there when he actually was good, who just cannot fathom wtf has happened in the last 5 years to reach this undesirable point in time.
One thing to his credit - adaptability. He's been flexible enough to keep all the different types of fans happy for the majority of time. Whether they're interested to hear his shit, his compilation sound, or just the old tiesto they once loved... its all in there, packed into every show.
His charisma and showmanship, go a long way to captivate new fans and audience outside of his regulars, and that is what makes him entertaining to the point of popular. It just proves that you can be a technical wizard in the booth, but if you're billy no mates, you'll never get really really popular.
