The mall can be good if you go in with the right attitude (ie: make fun of EVERYTHING and go into any store to find more things to make fun of), you're not there to buy things, you're there to interact with your date. I took a girl to a Chapters/Starbucks for coffee and making fun of books and she talked about it for MONTHS afterward because she was used to the typical dinner/movie first dates that guys kept taking her on. At it's core, it doesn't matter where you go. You just have to try and make it different (see: more interesting) from a typical hang-out with a friend. I think the key is having unique things to look at and talk about in between 'real' conversation. A trip through the same-old stores (ie: ACTUALLY shopping) in the mall has a high potential to backfire.
