alright alright.

the owner had me come in @ 9 (originally planned 10) to attempt and retain the dinner crowd (there's a restaurant downstairs - same owner). i started with some vocal deep house for a good hour, people grooved but no one really danced. although they stuck around and drank, so that's good.

i moved into the more mainstream house. shit like Tom Novy's remix of "Sexy Back" (Justin Timberlake). Some older Kaskade. Miguel Migs. and the like. a lot of the OM label stuff actually.

As people started shuffling in around midnight I started dropping the harder electro and top 40 remixes. Played a lot of Thomas Gold and Chriss Ortega stuff. The Lady Gaga remix mentioned in here worked really well with them. Along with a few more "top 40" electro remixes that i found. Deadmau5 worked well too. Basically anything electro, without too much going on, and recognizable vocals works for them. i remember dropping Royal Kinks - Borrowed Time (Michael Cassette Remix) and was happy to see that worked over well.

Towards the end of the night (2:30-3 am - that's right I played for almost 7 hours straight - until 4 am, with three or four cigarrette breaks, it was rough) I played some tunes twice, especially those that I remembered the crowd liked. And for the last hour or so I started bumping a lot of russian music, like the Soyuz (the russians in here will know what i'm talking about) mixes that I have - over 50% of the people that show up are either russian or ukrainian.

overall about 200 people showed up throughout the night (estimates based on what we made at the door). most of the time they were receptive to the music. I just had to build and build throughout the night, but always keep it vocal and especially recognizable vocals. between three or four vocal tracks i'd drop something recognizable, like a Daniel Portman Remix of Greece 2000, shit like that.

a couple of times through the night, maybe a good 5 even, random ppl would come up and ask me if i'd play any hip hop/rap in the night - one girl even offered me drugs if i played rap - i told them i forgot it at home. lol. it worked tho, i was like "come next time, i'll have it" though i won't. and those people settled down and danced anyway.

overall i could see the attraction to this type of music in the crowd tho. a lot of them get confidence to dance when it's stuff they recognize. and once you get the girls moving, the guys come after - every time. so the main thing was to focus on the girls, even if they're by the bar, see what type of tracks make them start bopping their heads, or wiggling their hips. play a couple more of that and they'll be dragging the guy they're with to the dancefloor.

i feel like i "sold out" lol. but it's good money, especially in this economy. and i still get to play a little of the stuff that i like, keeping mostly to vocals for now. after a while, after establishing myself as a DJ they like, i hope i can start sneaking in good stuff that they'll trust me with and that i also enjoy playing.

we'll see though.

Seems like you did had a lot of fun, and that your crowd was having a good time as well. I hope this works out for you and that you get to do your thing soon enough

this saturday.

i think i enjoy making people dance, regardless of what i'm playing. yeah it'd be nice if they moved to the deep groovy shit that i love to play. but i think in this day and age you have to produce it and get brought in specifically to play it by clubs. so that the crowd that enjoys it - recognizes you (on the flyer or whatever) and comes in to specifically check you out. if you're gonna be an "every weekend" DJ, without much of a production background, and for an every day average crowd (clueless white ppl) - you will have to play top 40 stuff to keep their interest in you. at least for a while. after some name recognition comes in, then you can slowly build up to do your own thing.

there's places all over the town that let me do the deep stuff. but most of them play crap and sometimes almost nobody comes. this allows me to play in front of bigger crowds, and get decent money for it. i guess it's "selling out" in a way... it is what it is.

there's a niche for everything i suppose. just gotta find it.

I keep a list of songs on my phone, the list with those songs also has these:
Whippenberg - Chakalaka
Reflekt - Need To Feel Loved
Kaskade - 4AM (Adam K & Soha)
Ercola - Deep At Night (Adam K & Soha)
Ercola - Every Word
Ercola - Follow Me

Used to be more but I upgraded the operating system on my phone and it erased all my memos.
