i do because if some people are just born thin then others can be just born the opposite and that's overweight. not saying they should be heifers but it's true. i don't believe this big boned bullshit though, people should just accept their largeness and do something to make sure they don't get any bigger.

Independent of genetics, I feel there is also something to be said for those who are born and raised in an environment whereby healthy nutritional selections simply weren't encouraged.

Now, there's certainly a pillar of personal responsibility over one's health that can't be overlooked (once someone reaches the point where they have more presiding control over it), but when considering these above mentioned mitigating circumstances, not every fat person deserves to be lumped together with that guy, who ravenously consumes to the deliberate neglect of their own health and appearance (especially those who make a concentrated effort at actively fighting against inherited behaviors).

I disagree. I still have yet to meet someone who ACTUALLY has genetic issues that cause them to be fat or obese.

Actually, my intent was to set the issue of genetics aside for a moment, and focus more upon environmental considerations.

In that case, then yes I do agree that environmental things have effects, but I am skeptical at how far reaching they really are. That is if by environmental factors you are referring to things external of the parental influence. If you are strictly referring to the parental influence, then it is 100% there. Although I do think that other external factors, such as extreme prevalence of HFCS as a sugar substitute, have an effect also. So, I don't think that 100% of the issue is something all parents can control.

Yeah, I'm largely referring to the types of influences that exist within the family, but since you brought it up, the broader communal influences regarding matters of nutrition is something that really can't be overlooked.

In San Francisco, for example, there's been a major push at providing better avenues for healthier eating in some of the more economically depressed areas, since they tend to be inundated with local markets that offer little more than your average gamut of junk food (chips, cookies, soda, etc). When your immediate area consists largely of stores like this, your flexibility in making sound health choices becomes rather limited indeed.
