you should be fine, i'm not that far from where you are and i've lived in this apartment for a bit over 2 years. i can't say i've ever really feared for my safety. the only time my roommate has ever been hassled in the area was while he was walking through morningside park at some ungodly hour. he's at columbia too and thinks walking through a park alone at 3am makes sense

It is kind of interesting how the scenery changes within one single street, though. For example, how much Broadway differs from Amsterdam at night from the 90th up. Also, going further to the East to CPW and crosing all those projects where those guys are hanging out all night long isn't too nice either. Still far away from 'crime', though.

I am from Manhattan, born and raised but live in Bk now. Most of you seem to have limited tourist experiences and expectations of NYC. We have amazing culture, entertainment, nightlife, art, food, transportation, you name it. As much as some people don't want to admit it, NYC is always in the top three for world cities.

People are not rude here, you get what you give. We have nice neighbors and while I don't say good morning to everyone I see, a smile is implied. People are busy here, there is a lot to do. You work very hard here because there is always someone else that wants your job, there is a lot of pressure.

How do you think NYers feel when you're standing in the middle of the block because you're looking up at some building and obstructing our way to get somewhere? I think a lot of tourists are very inconsiderate. This isn't Disney Land, we're not on display for your benefit. We don't say hi, we don't drink cosmos, go to Magnolia, wear scrunchies, wear sweater jackets, or fanny packs. There isn't some guy waiting to shank you at Rockefeller Center where you wait forever for ice skating. I have news for you, there is an amazing rink and I'm not telling where it is.

Firstly, what the fuck is Bk? Not everyone is from your country and knows what you are talking about.

Secondly, it's very funny that you say "How do you think NYers feel when you're standing in the middle of the block because you're looking up at some building and obstructing our way to get somewhere?" This just confirms that attitude that people have in New York; they're busy, and they don't have time to waste by helping people.

Personally, I think that's shithouse. How much time does it take to change direction because a tourist is in your way while they are admiring your city? Is it really that much of an issue, or are you so fucking important that you can't spare one second of your day? Is getting to an appointment really more imperative than helping someone with a trivial inquiry that takes no effort on your behalf? If New Yorkers act the way you are implying, then I would say that they are a bunch of selfish cunts and I am going to make a point of approaching as many strangers as possible with trivial questions next time I am there.
