Could it be that some people look for different things in different art forms? I have a feeling I do that.
When it comes to movies I have very high standards and am extremely critical of things. Whether my taste should be described as high-brow or pretentious is up to you, but it definitely on that side of the spectrum.
Music, on the other hand, is the complete opposite. I look for mindless fun, something energetic to pump me up. A musical equivalent to the movies I like would just bore me to death, cause it's not what I'm looking for.
And literature is some sort of middle ground, where I read both Proust and Stephen King, cause both are great in their way and style. Let me also randomly point out that John dies at the End is the greatest book ever written.
So yeah, tastes are certainly not consistent when people pursue different things with different art forms. And even the most pretentious twat sometimes just wants a bit of mindless fun. They just call it guilty pleasures then. Because they're idiots and feel guilty about what they enjoy.

I could definitely tell you that a fascination with space and futurism as a young kid certainly had an effect on my music tastes - notably my love for atmospheric and trippy progressive, ambient/downtempo, some trance. I don't think it's a stretch going from Carl Sagan's Cosmos to UFOrb...

I'm also a big gamer, my tastes tend toward Japanese games, retro games, indie games, RPGs, shmups... I love the Wipeout series but I got into those after I already dipped my toes into the world of electronic music. Have an appreciation for symphonic music due to loving all the classic RPG soundtracks - in fact recently I went to see a symphony orchestra play music from the Final Fantasy games

Politically, I'm socially liberal and fiscally centrist (maybe slightly Republican, in the "balance our budget" way not in the "cut taxes for the rich while slashing benefits for everybody else"), only thing I'm conservative on is defense.

Books wise, I prefer nonfiction and escapist fantasy/sci-fi, movies I'm not too picky I just don't like the big-budget blockbuster Michael Bay ones.
