With that said, there is a strong correlation of appearance, taste and ideology in the hipster image, and you can complicate it all you want. The biggest thing that annoys me about hipsters is not how they look but what they represent: cultural tribalism dressed up in irony and have-cake-and-eat clauses so people who think they're smart enough to transcend such behaviour can still participate in. Hipsters judge you on appearance, taste and beliefs as much as anyone else, and their liberal permissiveness is about as substantial as their atrophic leg muscles. |
You know, I agree completely with everything in your second paragraph, I do find those things gross and fucking stupid, but the umbrella that the word 'hipster' now represents is far too large and the whole thing is getting ridiculous. There are dickheads wearing every type of clothing under the sun and in almost every social group, just as there are nice people who might like to wear a scarf when out or shoes made locally.
People need to stop generalizing to such ridiculous lengths. As much as you try you cannot deny that each person is an individual and should be judged individually on their own merits, labeling and dividing serves no one.
I think nefardec's point here is that you cannot assume someone's identity just because of how they look, you can't judge their intention, their genuineness, or who they really are based on pictures or what you think their choice of fashion automatically implies.
