Earlier, I was mentioning to LKD that a few weeks back I was booked last minute to play at a party out in the west end in a unit above an autobody shop. The place is right down the street from me, yet prior to this night, I had no idea it even existed. Fantastic, artist-run space with some genuine attention to detail - great layout, sound, acoustics and decor, and they even served herbal tea at the bar. Started at 10 a.m., everyone arrived early, pumped and partied hard until we shut down close to 4 a.m. There were a couple of conga drummers and a kalimba player who provided some wonderful accompaniment during my set, totally ramping up the dancefloor. I only knew a handful of people there, had no idea whether or not they'd be into what I was playing, yet the night went off with nary a hitch.
So aside from bragging about my awesome evening  , I just wanted to point out that truly unique and vibin' parties are still out there, often it's just a matter of meeting the right people. Attending the same safe commercial venues, with the same crowds, week after week, you really shouldn't expect to experience much of anything different each time.
Personally, I'm done with Toronto's nightclub scene - with a scant few exceptions, it's largely turned into boring variations on the same theme ad infinitum, with the two substances that hold the absolute least amount of appeal to me fueling the majority of those in attendance. As I said in another thread, I already experienced the booze-n-blow bar scene in the late-80s/early 90s and it's even less appealing now than it was then.
