Who the hells read DJMag anyway? Is it based in US or in the UK? Anyway i would even consider Mixmag superior to this shit magazine.

The Digweed era ended in 2006.

one thing to add, Markus Schulz is the only one in the top 10 that is not a wanna be pop DJ.

You could be right, but we're not in 2005 anymore. Markus Schulz has gone downhill ever since 2008 and this year he was nothing but a complete disappointment! 90% of his sets in 2011 (especially the live ones) totally sucked, he started playing some crap imitation of 'techno' with weird 'piupiupoipoui' sounds and 'wirpwripwurp' sirens. Strange part is that the what so called 'coldharbour army' believe this is the new direction of the underground trance scene.
So Markus Schulz should be happy he 'secured' the 9th position, I'm huge fan of his older work (productions & sets), but he's a complete joke right now.

See I totally disagree with that. I have followed him since 2005 as well and the energy and crazyness in his sets the last year has been unmatched. I love it. He sold out 3 shows during WMC here in Miami so it goes to show you that whereas the old prog fans may not be happy he has evolved and his fan base has grown. in 2005 hardly anybody knew who he was. In 2011 he sells out gigs all over. He still plays plenty of prog trance in his sets, but on his World Tour shows this year I noticed he plays the first few hours from his extended sets that are always banging. His radio show is still better than all the other big name trance DJs.

I think both of you make valid points, 09 and 10 he was a different gear and blew everyone else out of the water, from all the clubbing I did every single 1 of his sets sticks in the memory, I still blast out Jochen Miller - Humanoid thanks to him for example but this year I've also noticed a large techno element coming into his sets, I saw him at space this year and for the first time ever I wasn't struck on a set of his for that very reason. As for that sound being held up as the new direction of the underground scene, you could argue it's the most prominent sound out there that isn't the saccharine vocal trouse thatis worryingly prominent

ShitSchulz has never been relevant, his crap mixes and productions belongs to the garbage all together. You just have bad taste in what you so called trance music..

Funny you should say that. I wouldnt say he is playing techno these days. 75% of the tunes he plays out (having heard him live twice in three months) are high octaine, trance based fodder with horrible electro stabs.

He isnt the only trance dj doing this. In fact I am finding that the majority of trance djs that do not adhere to the melodic Anjunabeats style are doing much the same. Is this trouse? Whatever it is, imo its killing the scene, or at least torturing it.

Im really struggling with trance now. It was (is?) my favourite genre and I go back to the early 90s with it so Im not aiming to dis the scene. Maybe Ive grown out of it? Trance djs seem to focus on electro tinged rubbish, melodic Anjunabeats tosh or psycadelia. Its just not for me. Im longing to hear some new, original hypnotic sounds. Can anyone recommend any before I bow out of the scene, maybe for good?

BT used to make the top 100 every year without ever having played a set in his life. Then when he did he dropped out!! True. Djing can seriously ruin a djs career!

A. Wow, never seen so much change from one year to the next. Think this is attributed to explosion of dance music of past two years. Have feeling that lot's of people voted for first time this year and our newbies to EDM. I was shocked to see such a dramatic change. Usually poll moves very slowly from year to year and can predict who is moving up 5-10 spaces and who is moving down. Not this year. Think rise will continure next year also.

C. Swedish House Mafia and Armada have hijacked half the poll. It's amazing how fast SHM have taken over the poll and brought there support DJ's into it. Read on some forums where people are like who the is AM21 and (whatever I don't even know correct initials nor care to) what do they play? It's amazing that they have pretty much all there support DJ's in the poll in a year. And secondly Armada, DAMN promotion machine. I can't even count how many DJ's they have in the poll, it's a lot for sure. True most of ones that were in it last year dropped a few places but also several new entries and continual rise of Dash Berlin ( and his anthem vocal trance).

D. Hey Gareth how is broadening your sound working out for you? Seems like he tried to copy Tiesto to some degree and it's not paying off. Surprised he fell the way he did. Think for the most part it pays to be true to your sound. Think DJ's get kinda high in poll then purposely try to broaden there sound and make it more commercial thinking they will get voted even higher. I don't think it works very well for them. I think Tiesto would still come in at number 3 if he was still playing only trance. I don't think his move to broaden his sound has made him any bigger. He was massive 5 years ago when he only played trance.

G. Overall trance is really falling in the polls I think (minus Armada, Anjunabeats and there marketing machines.)

This year I voted 1. Jerome Isma-Ae, 2. Jody Wisternoff, 3. Nic Fanciulli, 4. Mat Zo, 5. Koen Groeneveld

Knowing what I know now I would have voted Jerome Isma-Ae (Still think he will be in the next 50), 2. Nic Fancuilli (also think he will be in next 50), 3. Markus Schulz, 4. Mat Zo, 5. Manuel De La Mare (next 50 maybe I think) or Dubfire.

Re. 'explosion of dance music'? The scene is on its a*** here in the UK. Good its growing elsewhere, if thats the case.

Re. Emery - how does he do it? 13? I remember him getting letters published in Mixmag, djmag and Muzik mag complaining bitterly that he wasnt getting a chance, then he broke through. But why? He's nothing special at all. The trance scene in the UK is on its arse, he's the second highest Brit on the list but he simply doesnt register on most fans radar here. Is he popular in the States or Europe or is he purely a beneficiary of Armada's marketing machine? Its a mystery.

Re. Schulz - he is a fundamental part of Armada! In fact its ruined him imo with his new style. But commercially its been the making of him.

Re. predictions - Fanciulli's most popular days are gone. He was top 50 a few years back. Jerome's got a long way to go too.

How is it killing the scene? It has made things exciting again. I am so sick of stupid 2 min breakdowns with pianos, violins, harps, and fairy dust. But that is just my taste.

Good for a group of trance DJs to stand up and do something different. Don't diss a style of music that does not fit your tastes. Instead find a circle of DJs that do play what you like and support them.

The whole trance scene has turned into everyone bitching and putting down DJs that do not super serve your what you want to hear, instead of finding and praising the stuff you actually do like.

Not sure how Schulz' brand of trance is any better. Sure, it's a bit tougher than the usual Dash Berlin nonsense, but it's still a pale attempt at 'tech-trance' compared to the beasts Lieb used to release on the regular. Regardez:

So, erm, which post established, once and for all, that this is a superficial contest with no other merit than to establish commercial viability for DJ's arbitrarily designated in its ranking through a democratization which essentially values least objectionable over most deserving? Have we gotten there, yet? Anyone? You folks still arguing about who sucks worse and therefore didn't deserve their ranking?

I'm just glad I didn't see Skrillex #1 or in the Top 5 or 10.

That post was made half a decade ago.

I do agree that Markus Schulz is playing much worse stuff than he used to play in 2004-2008, but at least he deserves to be in the top 10 and dilute those pop djs who call themselves trance producers.

What strikes me the most is that John '00' Fleming didn't even make it on the list. Unbelievable! I think he's one of a few guys who plays real trance music.
