Relatively speaking, Canada isn't too shabby.
And I don't consider myself Canadian, even though I have citizenship. I'm just basing this opinion off of what I've experienced living up there, what people that have since lived there told me and the general consensus about the country.
People get so wrapped up bitching about where they live they forget about the things they should appreciate. |
I'm not saying its terrible, its a fantastic country to live in if all you plan on a stress free life, but the problem with that it is TOO stress free... its sterile.
I know what to appreciate; the free healthcare, the polite people, the safety, the comfort, the great economy (relatively with todays shitty global economy), post secondary education options (theyre great), the great care of people (theres a HIGH tolerance towards people with disabilities, poland for example youre fucked otherwise). I could go on and on... but thats irrelevant. Im not going to boast about shit thats fine.... its not broken, so it doesnt need to be mentioned. I mention what needs to be FIXED.
But the last three years ive been travelling quite a bit and its been a real eye opener, and after some time in Norway, I am absolutely floored how well the WORKING CLASS is taken care of there. The Canadian government doesnt give a FUCK about employees. Ontario Law states an employer doesnt even have to give you a reason for firing you, they can just dump you to the curb and thats it, even if your fulfilling all the requirements of the job. There are too many loopholes in the system for employers to get away with way too much. Add to that the shitty 2 week standard vacation time per year and life becomes very sad and repetitive.
I'm tired of 2 weeks of time off... Its 6 weeks standard in Norway and about 25 days in Germany. More or less the same elsewhere in Europe.
The fact is, the human body needs at least TWO WEEKS before it even begins to feel relaxed. Canadian employers dont typically give both the weeks off at once as they dont have to. So with 7 days off, its no wonder why so many people flock to Cuba all the time, its the only viable solution for a vacation. You know, I'd like to see more of Canada myself, but when a domestic flight costs 500 dollars or more to Calgary and considering $150 per night at a hotel, im not going to piss away that much cash on HALF my vacation time in Canada.
The job situation *REALLY* needs to change. Spam said get a job and stop being lazy. Fucking idiot, I worked 75 hours a week at my last job without complaining. My pay was *good* but it was only when my manager left the company and a consultant was brought in to give me the boot that really pissed me off. The 75 hours/week of doing work i wasnt hired to do (though still creative) and all the extra hours WERE NOT paid (literally zero overtime), was the fucking piss of. I've gone through company bankruptcies and the mass layoffs some of you guys might remember from HBC a few years ago, those never bothered me..... only until recently did it hit hard how fucked up the regulations are for WORKERS RIGHTS.
They'll instill ridiculous bullshit regulations like drinking laws until 2am and force everyone out of bars at 3am like dogs only to wonder why so many cops are needed at that time.... a simple fucking fix, but when it comes to improving the quality of employment, a pretty important issue, it gets shit on. I've done my part two years ago with politics in canada organizing rallies, but it was evident how passive canadians are to issues in canada, there wasnt much support. Seeing how this issue would be even more difficult to tackle, I've lost will and wont get far on my own (I had a team last time). So, while many of you may say 'shut up and leave canada if you dont like it' which is about the most IGNORANT thing to say rather than take the criticism and work on a solution to IMPROVE the situation, I'm thinking of leaving it as is and actually packing my shit and taking off.
I'll gladly take the 6 weeks mandatory vacation time, all overtime hours paid for etc. if it means i have to pay high taxes. If I'm to work 9-5, I expect 9-5..... not 8-10pm on a daily basis for the same salary and watch my life fade in some fucking office so the company president can get rich off the poor schmuck pulling in all the revenue.
*END RANT*
