I've got this mix burned to the HD in my car and definitely listen to it to this day. I loved this era of prog trance. You really don't get these smooth melodies much anymore. Such crap came after this (ie electro).

Those trance threads are the only thing keeping you revelant in MD. What's it like to have your own archnemesis?

When I think about 2004, I think about Shades of Blue the most. Chilled, twinkly mcprog at its finest, complete with cut up vocals used more as an extra layer of sound rather than lyrics. Still think it's gorgeous to this day.

fucking McProg, I hated it so much. There was some excellent music coming out in 2004 but it wasn't that slow twinkling sound, ugh.

The trance peak is traditionally recognized as 1999, I tend to agree with the consensus there. That being said, excellent trance continues to be played and performed, the solarstone CD, the most recent Oakenfold essential mix being good examples. I'd daresay those have surpassed much of the trance in recent years, though the test of time is still being conducted.

And I suppose people were saying exactly the same about 1999 in 2004.

I can understand the nostalgia. For me 2002 was the last genuinely great year for the old guard of dance music, but looking back 2004 was certainly a lot more respectable than the utter dross of 2005-2007, certainly the three worst years for music I've had the misfortune of living through.

2005 had the tail-end of the progressive breaks movement but yeah compared to '04 (and previous years) it was pretty dry. Especially when it came to both prog and trance... looking back at the TL in the OP and it's giving me a lot of nostalgia. I loved the McProg sound (still will always have a soft-spot for it! BT's Skylarking is definitely one of my favorite modern-day sounds and that seems to be one of the most direct successors to McProg).

Once you have listened to real prog you can never go back to McProg.

Once you have listened to "real prog" you can spend the rest of your life debating what "real prog" is.

ASOT and GDJB were week after week featuring some of the best trance I've (to this day) ever heard, Armin's and Schulz's compilation series had just kicked off what would be three solid years of quality installments, the ISOS series was back and sounding great, production tools and techniques had really begun to pick up...

Alex Stealthy, Funabashi, Mark Otten, Peter Martin, Kyau & Albert, Super8 & Tab, Ozgur Can, Mike Foyle, Probspot, Benz & MD, Gabriel & Dresden....yeah...those were some great times.

I miss McProg.

PROBSPOT ruled all! Yeah basically this in a nutshell. 1999 was it's first peak.

Actually, I've chosen to be "revelant" in threads regarding tech house, techno, deep house, melodic techno, etc. It's probably just that the only threads you participate in are related to trance, and that all trance threads inevitably turn into J00F wankfests.
