From memory, the Caprice has a slightly longer wheel-base than the regular Commodores, so perhaps they were just referring to the Caprice chassis rather than all the other fancy shit.
Though, why the hell a longer wheel-base would be useful as a police car is beyond me, especially handling-wise. Perhaps it's more in line with current American police car models though? Dunno. |
They are longer, it is a little known fact (unless you've owned a couple like I have- a WH from 1999 and a WK from 2003) that they're also a better built chassis than the normal, shorter wheelbase sedan. Its a lot stronger, virtually no flex and the handling is better than the sedans in a lot of ways, the weight doesn't make it great handling by any means but with some tighter suspension it'll give a very good account of itself.
But they are strong!
Put it this way, a large Toyota 4WD that rear-ended mine was a write off with most of its front end torn out from underneath it, the late model Mercedes it was pushed into was utterly destroyed to the point it was 'bent'. But in a nasty accident like that you're grateful for the very large amounts of metal between you and other cars, remember that in your little hatchbacks, you get hit hard and you're going to get turned into minced meat.
Most important thing is that there is more enough room in the back seat for a fat, angry american cop full of sugar and caffeine to swing a tazer on handcuffed minorities.

Yeah, what did you used to call yours? The 'road whale' or something?
