CDMA is much much better at handling multiple users on one cell phone tower, compared to GSM which is pretty poor at handling an overload of people (I think it's for every one CDMA tower, you need 4 GSM towers to get comparable capacity; GSM gives more of a "first come first serve" line, while CDMA can do multiple at once).
That is why at just about every major event with lots of people, Verizon people have little to no trouble using phones, while GSM carriers have problems. Some events bring in extra GSM towers to compensate, though.
At Coachella, all the people coming in from the UK on GSM could barely get good service. For BBM's, they sometimes too a LONG time to go through. For Verizon, even BBMs were pretty much instantaenous still.
