+1 - probably my favourtie country.

I been reading up heads on Slavakia lately and it seems like a cool place to go. Youth hostels about $5 a night, meals $3-$4, good stuff.

^^^ heheh you know you've caught the bug when you start planning your next trip when you haven't even finished your first

Rach: from my understanding Istanbul is an extremely cosmipolitan city and you would have no trouble roaming the streets on your own, i'm not sure about the rest of the country but it is fairly westernised (exponentially compared to other muslim states) and you should have no trouble if you stick to the beaten track. My mum travelled through Turkey alone 25 years ago and said it was fine

All my mates that i met overseas said Turkey is inundated with Australians also

ps. Contiki sucks, Independant Travel FTW!

r u serious? i just did a contiki trip last month around Europe and it was amazing!! we covered heaps of places in such a short time and having a bus drive u around is much better than flying to each city and dragging ur suitcase around eveywhere!

what didnt u like about it? we were lucky to have an awesome group on our trip too which helped a lot as everyone got along really well.

i just arrived back to sydney on tuesday and i'm already planning my next trip will prob work overseas for a few mths then travel some more.. better get over the jet lag first hey

i've never done Contiki actually, but i know that type of travel isn't for me; i prefer to grab a one way ticket to a country with a vague idea of the sites i want to see and then organise everything on the fly, asking other backpackers about the current hot spots, and planing the trip accordingly. There's nothing like the freedom of being able to wake up in one country and decide to catch a bus or a plane to another country on a whim and then working out your accomodation when you get there.

good to hear you had a good trip lisa!

i do agree, thats why i decided nopt to do a tour and do everything i wanted to do and for how many days!... but doing a 15 day tour then 2 months of free spirit travelling sounds good too
will def look into turkey, thanks for that jake

lol, havent written in here for a while, got back recently from switzerland, germany, france for 4 weeks in july/aug which was great!, spent about 3k in total for the whole trip! and I'm going back in november till mid jan in a few months again. were gonna go snowboarding in czech over new years and prolly in the swiss alps over christmas, should be good fun gonna run down the money to zero before i start work in jan when i get back... the only thing better than travelling with your parents paying for everything is having someone else's parents paying for everything and staying in their house! lol, nah, they're great.
