I've had both a hand grinder (wood) and a coffee grinder, and they both have good and bad things about them:
Hand Grinder:
-Can get sorta jammed, and hard to twist over time, although to clean it one time I just soaked it in alcohol over night and it came out smooth as silk (trojan silk that is), and it has never really clogged back up since then.
-Not as big as an auto grinder, so well suited for your travel bud kit (mine usually boils down to a ziplock bag with all the necessary gear in it)
Auto Grinder:
-So easy to use, and can crush through piles of weed really quickly. Especially good for when you're rolling those big cones we saw earlier on in the thread.
-This is a good thing AND a bad thing. The bad part is that I think it sorta shakes off some of the crystal in the process, and that is taking crystal away from your joints. I dont' think the hand grinder has the same problem. BUT, the good part is that all that crystal just collects in the grinder and can be used to augment joints. You just scrap a q-tip along the side and shake a layer of the stuff onto your ready to roll joint.... also, if you have burned through your stash... AND all your roach weed... it's time to get serious about getting more doobage, but in the mean time you can use the crystal in your grinder with tobacco or something to tide you over.
Something I'll throw into the mix too. I buy those little filter packs you can get at head shops. It's like a buck or two for a pack of 40 or so. I personally really like to have a decent filter, and I hate having to tear apart all my rolly packs (I'm an anal smoker I guess). If you use these with the 1+1/4 papers it's a great combo.
One way or the other, you cna't go wrong having a grinder.
