Too Many Djs! More Live Pa!!!

The live PA...( PA stands for performing artist)...is essential to the birth of a new scene. Most electronic music fans (house, trance, techno, breaks, etc) are natural critics. Reflector's vision is that one day, producers will emerge and bring out their gear and perform it as it was recorded. They will express with emotion, passion, and determination their raw electrical musical talent....Till that day...

You need lots of equipment and experience with it to be able to do live electronica performances. THe object in question is $$$$$$$$.
To be honest, I'd love to be a live PA, but money is in the way. Instead I produce at home, and am getting into DJing.... much like many TAs

PA stands for Public Address or Public Announcement, and refers to the fact that the sound comming from the PA system is live and not prerecorded. A PA system is used in clubs etc to amplify the sounds coming from a live band or an announcer. There are plenty of techno bands that perform live, like Rabbit in the Moon, The Orb, Orbital, Crystal Method, Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Future Sound of London, etc. But the main reason that most techno is performed via a Dj is because most producers don't make more than a few tracks. They don't put out albums, and if they do, a vast majority of them aren't good enough to perform live. They rely on computer editing etc to help them out and don't have the capacity to play all of the different samples all at once. This takes an increadible amount of talent and usually at least two people. I don't think that I've ever seen a live techno band perform that only had one guy up on stage, just like you don't see pop or rock music being performed by only one person.

I'd be willing to bet that most techno is produced by a single person, and therefore they don't have the capacity to perform live. Take Blank and Jones, for instance. There are two guys that spin, but also produce their own tracks, but most of the tracks that they spin are not theirs--I don't think that they have ever put out an album soley of new music that they have produced themselves. It has taken them years of development to put out the dozen or so tracks that they have produced themselves. I think that these limitations are why you don't see more live performances of techno bands.

The acts that you mentioned do not "play" all the instruments or use all the effects live, it's just too much. And there are one man PA's, what about Mike or Ricky Effe? There are lots of different ways you can go about performing live.

Lab 4 have a brilliant bit on live performances and how they play music on their site - check it out http://www.lab4.com/weaponry.html which should help you out understanding a bit more about how dance music can be played live.

I am one hundred percent sure that you can check for Second Sun this year. Before the end of the year, there will surely be a flood of shows lined up for them. And they are a live act. I have seen them once already, and it was VERY cool. They were 4 people on stage at the time when I saw them. Check them out at http://www.secondsun.info

Well, I haven't seen all of the bands above, but I know for a fact that Crystal Method, Orbital and Rabbit in the Moon all are live performances. They all have a mess of keyboards and effects and drum machines that they play live.

eyyy... who really cares. It's either going to be some guy/girl behind some synthesizers and euromixers and all other sound producing equipment or behind decks. Its not like they're going to sing or dance anyway...
