ok here is the situation. I am having problems with my dog. he is about to be two. at the moment i don't have the money to take him to a school so they can teach him how to behave.

what he does is he digs wholes near our backyard fence and escapes. i have had to put big pieces of rock where he has dug a hole, but he just goes and digs another one. so the cycle continues.
he always comes back two hours or so. the thing is that i don't want him to get run over. so this is what i plan to do. i will open up all the holes stand on the other side of the fence with a hose. (he hates being soaked with a hose. that way each time he sticks his head out to escape he gets hosed. that way he will associate something that he likes to do (escape) with something that he hate (soaked with a hose)

Will let you guys know how this work out. but if it doesnt help does any other dog owner have any ideas. also, i do take him out for walks as much as possible and that seems to help, but i can't do this all the time.

Sounds like an extreme version of Pavlov's dog! I guess that's a good enough conditioned response, unless of course, your dog likes water! I might recommend getting a choker collar and a leash and try to teach him some basic discipline like sitting and staying. Don't reward him too much either if you can help it.

Oh, and cutting his balls off might help as well, though I hate to recommend it!

the hose trick should work fine, but after it starts to work with the hose try just using words. let us know how it works out.. be prepared for lots of repetition.. dogs take a long time to understand

i guess its just the dog's instinct to dig holes and run around isnt is?

hahaha! what we have learned from Psychology is nicely connected to our life. In this case, it's not the meat powder though...

we never put our dogs through school.. and they turned out pretty well excpet for the stra barking at old age part.. but ya..

amm really if you act strickt and powerful to the point wehre he/she knows you are the master then everything should be ok

yell at him if violence is needed then u have no choice but to use it

i know it sounds crule but if u use it the proper way you might be able to help him out
when i say violence i mean grab the dog by the neck and push him down so his nose seees wot he did wrong at the same time yell at him saying this is bad and wrong and that he shouldnt doo this every time he does it then keep doing it .. dont squish his nose to the ground just close enough for him to smell it..

i've done that with my smallest dog when he would pee in the house and it worked..

another way of stopping him from diggin up is setting up conciuences.. such as locking him up in a cage or somthing for the enteire day or somthing
or keep him on a leash for the entire day for him to see that if he does that its wrong and that he will get punished.. i knwo it's a dog and dogs arn't human but it sitll works..

my big dog right now is beeing sent to garage jail cuz he kept walking off the property.. so hes not allowed going onto the yard at all like not hte big yard hes usualy on the small yard..

all in all you just really have to be strickt and show him your in control by mostly yelling and showing a firm voice.. and it has to be done more then once

Just make sure that punishment is immedeate, and strict. Water is good, or use the choke collar. One of my dogs is a little dumb and you have to smack him on the nose to even get his attention, but eventually they will make the assosiation.

Other things you can try.

1) when burying the hole put a bit of their feces in the hole. They won't redig there, but if they do it all over, digging will still be a problem.

2) Maybe he is a natural digger. Work with him and encourage him to dig in one part of the yard, but punish him if he does it anywhere else.

Most importantly, keep a dog tag on him until you are sure you can trust him again.

the way i secured my yard from digging dogs was to get a roll of chicken wire, about 12-18 inches wide. attach it to the bottom of the fence ad lay it flat on the ground, use tent pegs to hold the other end down. Now the dog has to dig a longer tunnel to get under. They tried a few times digging right at the fence line, hit the wire and gave up. Most dogs grow out of that behaviour when they are about 3, and my dogs never dig to get out anymore, just to get nice deep and comfy holes to sleep in on hot summer days

the main problem with a dog is obedience, and it's a hard thing to get, one of the best things to do is take him/her for the longest walk ever until they're ready to collapse, and then teach them things, We've managed to teach ben a bit of stuff but he still won't give and is very possessive over things he picks up and shows agression but when he's not like that he's soft as shit
