To answer questions:
I'm 26...been flying for 10 years and with the airline for over 3.
Pay is good...but there is a big misconception in what we make when we start out. When I started I made US$8.76/hour (18,240/yr). Having 3 years in (and a new contract) I'll push about 40K. A 20 year Jet captain makes about 120,000 here. So, put your time in...and you are very comforatable. But starting out...you qualify for government assistance/wellfare. And just to get here, you are lucky to make 7000 to 8000 a year instructing, flying rubber dog crap, to build flight time...and that's after 100,000 in college/training. So, there is a sacrifice...that pays off in time.
If you move up to a major airline, and stay for 20-30 years, you used to be able to make 200,000 ...again with lots of time in...but with big paycuts and trimming back it's a thing of the past. Airlines like, United, American, Air Canada...took upwards of 25% cuts across the board. Still plenty of money...as long as you don't/didn't go blow it on luxury...
So, I'm quite comforatable...but not rich...I don't have a better half to take all money...so there is a benefit to being single Still...I can't believe they pay me to fly...cept when the weather is crappy....but even that beats driving in traffic...now that's scary.
Always happy to entertain questions...
cheers

arent you lucky to have a job right now? i hear a lot about how the commercial airline industry is seriously struggling and many qualified people are getting laid off and have nowhere to go in an oversaturated market....
and i have no view. i have to go for a walk to even get near a window.

Nice!
And Yes Butterfly, I would say it is nice to have a job right now...I talked cut backs before, but also thousands of pilots are out of jobs. I know several that made the jump to majors when the hiring was good. Many of them were able to jump to corporate flying, or get back on with a smaller carrier, but there are still out of work.
My company and our sister major have done pretty well throughout. We did furlough a handful of pilots for about 6 months, but have got them back, and hired a few more. Meanwhile Alaska hired throughout the year and we've grown slowly, but steadily. The effect of everything here (war on terror/sars) seems to be less since we are on the west coast, and we DO NOT fly overseas.
Honestly, it's just a crappy time to be in this industry...when things are good, they are great...when they are bad...it doesn't get much worse.
Oh...and I carry my Nomad mp3 around we get some 2 and 3 hour breaks at airports...so it gets pretty boring
