Okay, so I'm kinda new to production, and after reading a thread in the DJ section (Vinyl vs CD), I found out about how DVD's have sound quality that is equal to or higher than industry standards. Now of course it would be rather stupid to try to distribute music DVD's...but what about using a DVD as a master copy? I do all of my production on my home computer, and I have a DVD burner already so it wouldn't be difficult. My main concern is that I want to be sure that I am getting the higher quality out of the DVD, because if it's the same as a CD it's pretty worthless. (DVD-r's cost about $2 a piece, which isn't a whole lot...but CD-R's are much cheaper). Is there anything about "soft" production (besides my software and my soundcard) that could cause me to lose sound quality when burning to DVD?

My main idea was to burn an album straight to DVD, then use it to make any CD's I wanted to produce. That way in theory I could always have a higher quality hard copy versus directly copying from a CD.

I dont think that is necessary..

I dont think quality degrades after burning CDs because it is digital, not analogue.

I could only see it being useful if your song(s) could not fit on a 700 mb disc

I think DVD's do have a higher sound quality than normal Cd's, but I don't know at which rate they are encoded.
Cd's for example have a sampling frequency of 44 Khz. Maybe DVD's have 48 Khz, but I don't know that for sure.
But if you create a master copy with a DVD and then burn cd-r's with it, you will lose the sound quality also! So the master copy would be redundant.

In general, CD's have a good quality and you won't hear much difference between higher quality recordings and cd's on most audio systems. So stick with the CD!

id just stick to CD as its cheaper and no one will really be able to tell the difference in sounds levels/quality unless its a horrible rip
