Just a quick question, a friend of mine is looking into buying a set of Ortofon Nightclub E cartridges in the "OM" style, that is, the non-concorde style. Unfortunately, no online store we ever look at actually seems to sell them. Do these really exist? We've seen pictures of them, so we they're out there somewhere, but finding them is a whole other story.
Could anyone recommend an online store where they've seen these being sold?
Look under Ortofon OM cartridge.. there is the (S)pherical and (E)liptical versions.
keep in mind that the E is ideal when using for recording purposes, but it wears records down more. If he wants to use for all purpose, go with the S tip.
There are other stores around, do a search for "Ortofon OM Cartridge", see what you find.

actually, spherical needles put more wear on records than elliptical needles. think about a larger amount of force distributed over a smaller area (these are spherical needles), and this is what's happening to your records. elliptical needles distribute the same amount of force over a larger area, hence record wear is lower.
please see this site for lots more interesting needle info:
A little secret for you guys (confirmed by an Ortofon employee). The cartridge in Ortofon dj series (so the Concorde and OM) only are different in color...
So you can put a Nightclub tip on a Pro S cartridge, it's still the Nightclub specs you'll get.

yeah, I've read that before too.
On an ortofon shell, you can put every ortofon tip.

I have always heard and read that spherical wear records less... First time i hear that elliptical will wear records less.
IN a ortofon FAQ, they state that most sources say that spherical needles provide less record wear than elliptical, but that there is no scientific proof.
Check out here: http://www.dancetronics.com/ortofon/ortofaq.html
All im saying is that ive always heard differently. But there are always two sides to a story.

That's because to have the same tracking performance of a spherical needle, you need to apply more weight on the elliptical. In total it comes down to more wear for the elliptical.
