Smile 40 Things DJ's Hate To Hear

I Found this on This page. Very funny and REAL!!!!! LOL I Put a '' face on phrases that more than one time (or a combination of them) i've heard from people. It's really frustrating to hear this stuff, but in some cases it can tell you when you're doing something wrong

1. Play some real music.
2. Play something that somebody actually wants to hear.
3. Play something faster,more upbeat.
4. Play something we can dance to.
5. Play something that has a beat.
6. Don't play any crap.
7. Shut this off! (so what if the dance floor is full!)
8. Nobody likes this; it sucks ,you suck.
9. I need a song,but I don't know what it is.
10. Throw on some Zeppelin, it'll get them rockin!
11. Thanks, now play the whole CD.
12. So it skips, play it anyway!
13. Play it! Or I'll knock you into next week! (ok, Mom)
14. Don't play it, cause my friend is here and she'll cry.
15. It's the only song my boyfriend knows how to dance to.
16. Play it and I'll love you forever.
17. There's fifty bucks in it for you (yea...right)
18. Next, next, next, next! Play it next! It's gotta be next!
19. Don't play it next, wait 'till I come back.
20. You didn't just play it! I've been here all night and I haven't heard it.
21. Play it again, no one will notice.
22. Don't play that, everybody's sick of it.
23. Nobody cares what you play, they just wanna drink. (once again, thanks Mom)
24. Everybody'll dance. Everybody wants to hear it.
25. Play it next 'cause we're gonna leave right away.
26. Play it now or I'll leave. (and your point being?)
27. It's a request...you have to play it.
28. Play it or I'll have you fired. (Mom again)
29. Hey! Remember who's paying you!
30. We can't hear it in the back. Turn it up!
31. It's too loud up front, turn it down.
32. What songs you got? Let me look through your stuff. Don't worry I know what I'm doing,I have CD's at home.
33. I think it's the third or forth song....just play the whole CD.
34. You know the song....it goes like this "Da Dun Da Da De Da...."
35. There's some guy singing and maybe a guitar....oh... and drums.
36. Your're the DJ , you should know it.
37. What do you mean you don't have it, sure you have it.
38. Just listen to me and I'll get them dancing. Trust me.
39. You've got time for one more. Come on! I know the owner.
40. Just one more and we'll leave. Really we will. (They never do)

lol that made my day. I've heard so many of these in different settings.

I must admit I was guilty of requesting a tune once but I was very drunk and heck, it was Plump DJ's - Scram so it wasn't that bad

i'll request a tune or a tune by a particular artist if i'm in a more top forty-ish club/ bar but i'll only do it once a night if at all, and i dont badger the poor guy about it. i was djing last night at this bar/ with a dancefloor (dont know how to describe it really) and i got totally beat down with requests to the point that i just stopped listening to people. it was like 12:35 bar time (closed at 1) and i had a line three deep of people asking me to play some totally off the wall songs. drunk chicks that were all nice to me at the begining of the night we're not happy at the end, but what can you do? the dancefloor was full, so i deem the night a success

I think i have heard every single one of those atwork at various venues....

most annoying:

'Play this one and EVERYBODY will dance..' (doesnt matter that its midnite and dancefloor is rammed anyway.... )

The only i love is:

"The owner told me you could play that and that tune!"

Makes me laugh everytime I hear it, and that's about 10 times a night...

since this is a trance website, and that list is for unspecified DJ genres...i'm gonna say i hate it when people come up and say "can you play some hip-hop next"

(actually kind of a variation between # 4 & 5)

Those are so damn true...the hard part is coming up with snappy responses...I think that the DJ booth should be surrounded by bouncers so that the DJ won't be pestered by idiots

Whilst playing in a Swedish town that shall remain anonymous I was asked to play some Depeche Mode in the middle of a peak time trance set. The bloke got so pissed when I said no that he actually had to be kicked out by security.

The other classic was a conversation had in a club in Rochester (England) right infront of my eyes between a mate and a totally wrecked clubber.

Clubber: When are you going to play something decent (I hate that line so much).
Mate: such as?
Clubber: I don't know, something with a beat?
Mate: That doesn't help me.
Clubber: You're shit!
Mate: Do you want anything or not?
Clubber: Yeah... play something good.
Mate: Such as?
Clubber: I don't know, anything by Pete Tong.
Mate: Pete Tong is a DJ.
Clubber: No he's not!
Mate: Yes he is.
Clubber: No he's not, I got his f*ckin' album!

Obviously someone not capable of reading the inlay card on a ministry of sound compilation.

Weirdest request I ever got whilst working was from a guy who wanted to know if I would like to have sex with his girlfriend. Thought he was taking the mick at first but turned out to be quite genuine. Might have considered it but he wanted to watch... and that's just not on

There are some scary people out there and being a DJ can be quite hazardous so be warned. On the whole though I actually like being able to talk to people as I think it helps if you are nice to them even if you don't always play what they want. Must admit though that I don't often speak to people whilst DJing, usually one of the warm ups guys will do that (Not through choice, just seems to happen that way). It's always nice to speak to people after though.

Cheers
Nem

some people can be great- some are just a pain in the ass....
Ive been threatened, propositioned, had people wait outside afterwards because i wouldnt play a track for them-all sorts.

Playing more than one style in one night as i do (being a more commercial club dj) is also a pain- as you can bet your ass as soon as you stop playing one style or whatever people will come and ask for it...

This happened on saturday- [in the middle of a classic dancey set-, greece 2000,for an angel, cafe del mar, cosmic gate and all that gubbins...]

punter- can you play fatman scoop (big hip hop jump upparty tune which ive had for 3 years and people are only now starting to know what it is)
me - ive played it already
punter- no you havent- ive been here for 2 hours and you havent
me - i played it an hour ago
punter - no you havent
me - hmmm.....[resisting temptation to tell her to f*ck off]
punter-can you play it again
me - ill stick it on again after 2am when i play more hip hop and r&b
punter - play it now everyone will dance
me -the dance floor is full already!!!
punter- oh...erm [pause] play it now. please.
me - later on- any dance tune you want to hear?
punter -[reels off this list of more hip hop stuff...]
me- ill sort some of them out for you later on....
punter- and fatman scoop- play it next!

At that point you have to turn away from them and carry on doing your job....

Typical example of the stuff i have to deal with night after night....
All part and parcel of the job

Bottom line is - you cant please all of the people all of the time....
