now before i start id like to state i love paul van dyk as much as the next guy he got me into trance and for an angel is one of my favs (along with yahel's voyage :P) but just try to take my point on board
ok here goes, when i was reading that paul van dyk interview and then the funkstar deluxe interview something struck me: this is nothing new we all know pauls stance on mp3s and all that other crap but just look at the two variations in contrast, lik ei did it makes you think

I've never bought your music nor do I intend to. Does that piss you off?" What do you think of the whole mp3 thing and how are musicians going to make their money in times to come?

Well, you've basically answered the question, how are musicians going to make their money? That's basically stealing. I don't think if this guy worked in a bakery he would feel comfortable when people come in the morning and just take everything. He basically was working all day, preparing the food. It's not the way it's going to work and I think its also a lack of respect towards the artist you're supposed to like. I always like to have the CD in my hand and see the artwork and stuff. It's not enough for me just to listen to it in a way - but something or someone like this, it is stealing. Someone is making something and someone else is just taking it for free.

If someone told you he had mp3s of every one of your songs from the net, loved your music, but was not prepared to pay for it - what would you say?

Well, he's got my tracks and I suppose he likes them since he has them. To me it's not all about making money from what I do. The most important thing for me is to spread my music and to make as many people happy as possible. So, it's alright with me… a

now whether the response (funkstar's) is manufactured in the world of interviews it would probablybe ideal to say that (seeing the audience is pcmusic ) and therefore you can respect paul van dyk for speaking his mind rather than a manufactured answer but with all the 'praise' and no id 'never' do ricky martin cause hes to 'poppy'and sells millions of records dont you think its a bit hypocrytical on one hand hes saying how it hurts his sales and in the next question talking about some fancy mini disk player whcih can only do this and that, maybe this applies to others and fair enough, but paul van dyk gimme a break the guy must go at least 20,000 grand a gig not to mention his record sales which are hardly hurting. I dunno i guess the reason im writing this is i expected a response such as funkstar's although not if it was untrue. I guess i just wanted him to say it and mean it because when think about it for us his fans its all about the music and youd like to think thats mutual.

once again im not calling for flames just too see this in its proper light? so,:P who wants my balls
let me stress again im a huge paul van dyk fan, really.

Whether musicians make it clear or not, a large part of why they make their music is because of money. Sure they might say things like 'as long as my music gets heard' and I believe them but there is still that voice inside their head that says 'people are taking money out of my pocket by downloading mp3s and not paying for them'. If people like PvD get pissed off about people practically 'stealing' their music, they have every right to. Sure, even with people downloading their music, artists such as PvD will still be rich and happy but nonetheless...people are still stealing their music. PvD was also kind of right with saying that electronic music artists that are just starting out are hurt by their stuff being downloaded and not bought...I said 'kind of' because they still gain exposure when being downloaded, they just don't get paid. To sum it up, PvD has a right to be mad about people downloading his music and not paying for it but he shouldn't worry about it much. Funkstar Deluxe is lying a bit when he says 'its just about getting my music heard'. Sure, your music is being heard, but your not pissed that you're not getting any $?

well i kinda look at it in a big sense. It seems that this mp3 thing has sparked something new in the world economy, a concept called sharing. now this may be wrong or right but it definitly wont go away. my view on this is that people who want to make money from what they do (and rightly so) need to think of a new way to do this. something revalutionary.... i dont know what though (i havent thought of that part yet )

Well u gotta put yourself in the shoes of the producer... exactly like PvD said, 30,000 records wouldnt effect Madonna, but PvD is lucky to sell a quarter of what she sells... now 30,000 albums is alot of money...

How would u feel if u missed out on a 300,000 dollars because of kids downloading your music off the net instead of buying it?? It all adds up, and i do myself d/l MP3's but hey... what can ya do huh???

to be honest i wouldnt give a shite if ppl bought or d/l'd my music. c'monlets face it, when it comes to trance and house, 90% of the producers we hear also DJ, and beleive me when u DJ at such a level as the ppl we are talking about here (i.e. funkstar deluxe & PvD)you definatlty aint poor. music is art, art is expression, should u pay to hear an expression? trance is made by the people, its played by the people for the people, so ppl who moan at us for dlin instead of buying, go and moan at someone who actually gives a rats ass what u think anyways, what do they expect when we have to shell out 17 quid for the new trance nation or whatever...

Now I may be biased because PVD is my favorite DJ/producer , but I agree with what he says in his interview. If he goes out and produces these amazing tracks that people really enjoy, then why wouldn't they just buy his album? He puts a lot of work into it and deserves some sort of compensation. Its not like he puts out these CD's like oakie (and others) with other peoples tracks. The CD's he puts out are HIS. I admit I do download quite a bit of his stuff, but only his live sets which aren't really in stores. I do/will buy any CD that is available for purchase that he produces. And yes, he does get quite a bit of money for his gigs, but if I had to go from Europe one day, to chicago, to boston, and then to england all in a 4 day span and also Spin for 3-4 hours in each place, you better be payin me some serious loot, which he does get and rightfully deserves...
