Whoever told you M-audio isn't good enough for producing doesn't know what he's talking about.
Sure M-audio isn't the absolute best, but they have an excellent price/quality ratio.
Sure, RME is a step higher, but the price is higher also.
Again, it all depends what you wanna do. Keep in mind a Digi 9636 has only ADAT and SPdif/Toslink ports. So you'll need an additional AD/DA convertor (even for monitoring). Which makes it pretty expensive.
If you wanna stick RME, and have a little bit of everything (analog in outs, midi, spdif and Adat), I suggest you look for the RME Multiface... Excellent card also, and upgradeable if you need more later.
