Whoever told you M-audio isn't good enough for producing doesn't know what he's talking about.

Sure M-audio isn't the absolute best, but they have an excellent price/quality ratio.

Sure, RME is a step higher, but the price is higher also.

Again, it all depends what you wanna do. Keep in mind a Digi 9636 has only ADAT and SPdif/Toslink ports. So you'll need an additional AD/DA convertor (even for monitoring). Which makes it pretty expensive.

If you wanna stick RME, and have a little bit of everything (analog in outs, midi, spdif and Adat), I suggest you look for the RME Multiface... Excellent card also, and upgradeable if you need more later.

I'm getting an RME-DIGI9652 tomorrow actually so if you hold on I can give you my view of it then

well as for the monitoringproblem, can't you just use a regular soundcard for monitoring and let the hammerfall do all the hard processing?

I own a RME HDSP9652. I fined tuned the latency down to 3 ms. Their documentation is decent but not great. Their support forums however is pretty good. You will get your questions answered by very technical people.

FYI, Digi 9636 is their older model of the HDSP9636. And their expansion boards will allow analog output for monitoring.

My only suggestion is check their support section on problem hardware and reference systems.

hmm okay a little question for the few of ya out there owning a hammerfall-card

how do you monitor on it?

I just got my card and I tested to monitor with the phono-cables that I connect to the S/PDIF port (not the adat one but the pin one)
I can hear the sound but it's like LTS of noise too

is it even possible to monitor directly from the hammerfallcard or do I need to get optical stuff to do this? (like a mixer and such)

Sorry to say you'll need a digital-to-analog converter. I was in the same position and I had to get an additional converter to moniter directly.

FYI, I got the M-audio Super DAC to meet this need.

but if i´m buying the RME then its gonna be a hell of expensive for me.

so then i have another question, which soundcard will be a good sell for my first time home studio?...
right now i´m using flstudio & cubase sx with a lot of good vsti too...

Like I said, take a look at the RME Multiface (or if you wanna go more digital, the Digiface, it still features a line/phones out). It has a breakout box with analog and digital outputs, and performance wise it's the same. And if later you need more, their drivers accept several cards (so you could add an HDSP if needed).

Vizay can't use a multiface or digiface with his card. He would need to purchase an additional PCI Card to go with the multiface / digiface.

okay so how much does the cheapest converter I should go with cost? (it shouldn't be too crappy but it doesn't have to be uber)

just throw in some tips that works with my card (I figure I can go with not just RME converters but others too, right?)

I bought the card for 250$ from a guy so I figure I can sell it for the same and buy an audiophile instead if the converters are to expensive....is that a good choise or will i regret it?

Depends on how many digital signals you want to convert to analog. Any converter will do really. I am using an M-Audio SuperDAC for my solution.

250 for the DIGI9652 is a good price considering the HDSP9652 is $600. You got a good deal.
