im in a fucking quandry, and that's putting it lightly. w/ all my heart i want to produce right now, but i wouldnt have the money after spending about 4000$ on dj shit the past 6 mos.. and im going back to school soon (2nd yr uni) so i wont have anywhere close to cash

for a keyboard/workstation setup (about 3 Gs)

so what should i do, try and spin until i get some cash out of it, and then try to make my own stuff?

cuz i dont have the killer dedication, to spin 4 hrs a day that other djs have. it pisses me off that im limited to the vinyl I BUY, if you know what i mean...
so outside of making demo tapes and hoping to get picked up somewhere, its not like there's a lot i can do.

Well even if you start producing you will very likely still be one of many electronic musicians struggling to get their work released ... producing isn't an immediate way to success.
DJing is definitely NOT a profitable job, except for a fortunate few - especially if you maintain your musical integrity (ie. not start playing at top 40 bars, high school dances, or something along those lines).
If you're really that interested in producing, there is many very useful tools and programs available, for very cheap or even free (buzz tracker, anyone ?) so it is a very good foundation to start making tracks and get your name out, at least on the internet. By then you can probably save up for a small studio and start making music more seriously.

thank you for ur input. basically i dunno if i'll have what it takes to succeed big-time as a dj, w/ my musical background i think i DO have a shot as a producer.. (i have composed award-winning classical music, many yrs back) not to sound cocky

but it seems like the best bet.

anyways so what kind of software should i look at

i have fruity loops, which seems easy but the keyboard edit STOPPED WORKING for me, so obviously i cant do shit w/ notes.
and cubase, which i have no idea how to use..

what else, or what instead, should i use..

simple stuff drum-wise, id like to rely heavily on melodies for success

if you want to be a successful dj. you have to produce music! Almost 99.9% of the djs made music before they became famous. So what i say that you start making music on some software based synths and stuff like that! start to get the feel of music. To make money spin at parties or get a job. well have fun making music! pe@ce

Although being short on cash could interfere with DJ'ing it shouldn't keep you from producing. Just stick to using your computer and whatever production software you can get your hands on. You can pick up almost all the production skills you'll need by just working on your computer.

Also you shouldn't need to get a special workstation for production unless your current PC is really old, even then perhaps upgrading would be more cost effective.

Another thought for production, you could get the bulk of a song you want to do down at home. Then later you could rent a professional studio for a day or so to finish it off/polish it. Maybe your university even has some of the equiptment you want to work on available for student use if you go through the right channels. It's worth investigation.

na man i just listen to this idea that i have! if you wanna start making music get reason, fruity loops, and rebirth. If you wanna remix songs then get Acid 3. Follow these steps and it can help you alot man!

1. Go to www.download.com or www.musiccity.com
2. type in morpheus
3. download that piece.
4. type in the stuff that you want in the SOFTWARE SELECTION THAT IT GIVES YOU!
5. and then start downloading it!
6. You should be able to find a crack or a full version.

Man trust me, its good to learn the basics first! then start buying some equipment! thats what i am gonna do! so watch out TA's my shit is gonna be off the hook!!

um yeah thanks for the advice on morpheus... regarding music... its not like i have to get the feel of it, ive been having the "feel of it" since i was 3

all i need to figure is song structure, and how to use/place samples and instruments..

so its not like "hey! i want to make money fast, what do i do?" =P

Yep couldnt agree with u more. Im just about to fork out £1800 just for some decks and a mixer, but im neglecting it coz i want more studio gear. Nowadys producers are earning more,eg look at Ferry, started on Cubase when he was sixteen, while his m8's were kicking Clogs. Im got a Roland Groovesynth, and old Akai S1000 Sampler, Korg Electribe, and ive come up with so awesome riffs man, and ive remixed some choons.

So i had learn about Song Structure, and what keys fitted together and what didnt, its just part of the learning process. Im after Reason which will help me coz i can wire Rebirh, and all my gear to it, but if u cant afford the gear m8, just use Soft Synths. Im strting to hehe

yeah you seem to have the same mindset as me, except you're actually going and making hard-copy stuff. which is real good =)

you wouldnt believe some of the ideas i have for remixing.. i write down little chords or record it on my ma's electric piano (short things) so i wont forget the chord progressions in the future

the most promising stuff ive come up w/ is a rmx of scorchio, and a "part 2" to free radical - surreal..

just need some kinda synth, or decent program... im begging again please
