I guess my intrepretation of trance is: oriented more towards synths and melodies than to percussion and beats, though they still play a part in the music of course, and a lot of trance is predictable in it's layout of intros, outros, climaxes, breakdowns, etc. Progressive trance I would say has more of an emphasis on percussion and beats than it does on intricate melodies and synths, though they play a part in prog.
But yeah, it's open to interpretation, so it's hard to be right or wrong about these things. Categorising music styles tends to be done with such elitish and strict attitudes at times, which I don't believe there is a need for. Describe your fav music with your own vocabulary and feelings I say
