Playing 144 songs at 134.

I just picked up Paul Van Dyk's Time of Our Life and it is a pretty quick tune. I have to set the pitch at like -4 to get it to match my other stuff. The thing is, I am used to hearing it at 144 BPM or so, so now when I hear it when I play it at around 134 it sounds funny.

what do you guys think about slowing down songs, think it sounds stupid, or do ya think as long as the beats match it is good.

songs "usually" sound better speeded up as opposed to slowed down.

anything under -6% usually sounds pretty shitty i think.

Yeah, it's possible; but, a lot of songs tend to sound "de-energized" when you play them slow. To make in work, you will have to carefully choose the tracks that surround it in the mix.

yah... if it sounds funny slowed down then it doesnt belong in your mix... not even in the same room as your mix

it may be a good song in your ears... but generally its better to have a +pitch with the tracks in your mix... of course, this is different for every track... with my mixes i can tell you that theres usually one 1 song where the pitch is -1%~... i try to keep everything else at 0 or higher...

yeah for some songs I have to put it between -1 and -2, but this -4 wierded me out. I think I might adjust the pitch up when the break happens then slow it down later....but I think I have to experiment with that too, it could sound like utter shit. If thats the case, I need to get more 144 BPM records and split my set...

i tend to think that usually the song doesn't sound really good when it's adjusted +/- 5% or more. this is not only because it's not the original bpm it was produced at, but because at every 2% change the key changes.

my suggestion is that you CAN'T spin a 144 bpm record in teh same set as 130 something records and have it sound good. that's just the way it is. you could work it with 140 bpm though, definitely.

yeah, that's true. Over 5%, the voices start to sound wacky, unless you've got a key correction. I've got it, but still, over the 10%, it sounds weird.

Every 6.6 or so % is a key change. Between the 1.5-5.0 range you get kind of a disharmonious sound if the other record is zeroed.
