I've got a Soundblaster Audigy 2 which I've used to record from a turntable and it worked well, in fact I can't tell the difference between the recordings and the original vinyl (MP3s from CDs too). You might be able to get one low-cost.

But it only has 1/8" jacks which might not last long if you do a lot of re-connecting. I think DjJade pointed that out before, the M-Audio and other gear uses RCA or other jacks that should be stronger.

I have a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 (flame suit on).
its the only card on the market that supports 24bit/192khz audio. it has a great recording quality (download my 11-16-03 set in my signature). If you get the Platinum Audigy 2 than I think you can you balanced inputs. (note: my sets were recorded unbalanced)

Yes the IEEE-1394 firewire port on my SB Audigy 2 is a fringe benefit that actually works well, I've captured and output a fair amount of DV camcorder video with no problems, for me this saves the cost of a Firewire card and frees up a motherboard slot.

have you noticed any card conflicts with the audiophile? I cannot have mine in at the same time as my firewire card. The system continuously reboots. It is either one or the other.

You don't need 192khz for producing!!!
thats for dvd 5.1surround
nevertheless you;ll never reach the 192khz quality

anyhow I was talking about producing
if you want a card for dvd get a 24/192
if you want to record sets you don't need both much
but take the echo mia IMO

Check out the ST Audio DSP24V, made by a company called Hoontech. This is a professional soundcard using the Envy24 chipset, as used by the M-Audio cards amongst others, so the sound quality is identical, i.e. excellent. It can record 24bit samples at 96kHz, with only a 2ms latency, and the sound quality is a million times better than any crap from Creative.

Hoontech have tried to make this card as affordable as possible, and hence it has only one input and one output - the Envy24 chip is capable of many more.

The I/O ports are gold plated RCA's - perfect for connecting to a mixer. I picked up one of these in the UK a couple of years back for about £100 - so it should be even cheaper than that by now, especially in the US.

Might not want to get a Mia seeings though it's been discontinued. They are still supporting it with drivers etc but for how long?

I have the Echo MIA card, but the features that i was looking for in a soundcard (when i was purchasing)were these things:
- 1/4" inputs jacks (less distortion with 1/4" vs 1/8" headphone or RCA plug)
- good/clean 24-bit analog to digital converter chip.
- PCI based for less latency (if you plan to over-dubb when multi track mixing/producing)
- full duplex
- digital input was minor (at this time).
- compatible with a MAC, when i get one...

Some other sound cards cost hella bank out there, but they have a bunch of features that I didnt need.
