my guess is that since the ENTIRE record, beats, vocals, this that are all off pitch it doesnt bother people. since the pitches are still the same difference away. if you had all diff parts of the song at different pitches i bet that would get annoying.
but i dont have an expert ear. in fact i dont think i can hear very well at all -- too much music =)

And when changing the pitch during a song, it's always easier, more agreeable to the ear or even less noticeable when you raise the pitch as opposed to lowering the pitch. For some reason, when you lower the pitch during a song, it can be very noticable, therefore you have to do that much more gradually than raising the pitch.
