Currently i am looking at buying a Stanton S-550 duels along with a Behringer Pro Mixer VMX200 for just under $600 canadian.
I'm buying them used and they were bought less than a year ago and are in very good shape.
This would be my first purchase of equipment and it will be used strictly for home use. Is this setup decent enough for someone who is just starting to learn?
Also since i don't have that much experience with dj equipment, what should i look for with this used stuff to make sure that everything is legit, and working properly?

ok.. I have ZERO idea about those Stanton tables... personally I don't really go near stanton equipment... However the mixer is extremely good.. that whole series has gotten rave reviews, and lik 99% of people really like them... as for looking for stuff when buying used (or new) is make sure that the deck holds PERFECT pitch. Set it in quartz lock or at 0% and make sure that the strobe spots are at a stand still... if they are moving forward or backward in any way, don't bother getting the setup... If a deck doesn't hold pitch it will make learning DJing extremely frustrating and difficult... Also make sure the needles (if it comes with any) are in good shape, make sure the tonearm has little or no damage, and make sure that all the cables are in good condition...

the stanton S-550 is a duel CD, not vinyl.

i'd try my luck on ebay/with used gear...

if youre lucky you might be able to get a nice
setup for $600. but its risky and requires you
do your research on the equipment.

yes, what you posted sounds quite OK for learning,
but then comes that whole "you are gonna upgrade
anyway, or sell, and if you have better gear you
can sell it for more or wont need to upgrade as much"

You ain't gonna like this but if I was you, you should invest in decks, starting with the PT-2100 or TT200 would be fine, or Techs for less trouble, you could buy them later and have a Vinyl and CD setup, but thats upto you, but I guarantee you WILL BE BITTEN BY THE VINYL BUG AND THEN WANT DECKS, especially if you pick it up fast, its all upto you of course, but just giving some advice, and as for the setup your looking at, I'm sure you could get the same for less or better for the same price, if you do go to buy them, take along somebody that maybe knows about this kinda stuff or even better, take a DJ, but if you go by yourself, make sure there are no scratches or dents ANYWHERE on the equipment, even under it (it coulda been dropped), and go with your gut instinct, well thats all the advice I can give right now that hasn't been said yet, hope you make the right decision and become a good DJ.

I really don't see the point in buying used stuff. Nowadays new tables and mixers are getting CHEAP. I'd go for some Stantons. That's what I have, and I love them. Don't now much about the mixer you're gonna get, but you need turntables. Beleive me, you're gonna want to mix records.
