I don't think trance will ever be nearly as popular in America as it is over in most of Europe. The countries just too spread out. I mean, how is someone in Nebraska going to get introduced to trance? Going to clubs and raves are what usually introduce people to trance, and tons of people are far, far away from the heavily populated areas where those things are at.
Also, one of the things that drives dance music in Europe is the differing laguages. Think about it. If you live in some small country like holland, you're going to have a limited selection of quality music to choose from in your own language, and no one really wants to listen to, say, rock music in another language. The lyrics just get in the way. With dance and trance, someone from Holland can pick up a tune produced in Italy or England or wherever and it doesn't really matter. Alot of the tunes are instrumentals, and even when they aren't the lyrics usually aren't excessive. In the US, weve got an unending selection of good music made in our native language, so people usually like and expect songs with plenty of lyrics.
So I don't think dance music in general, or trance in particular will ever be very big in the US.

believe me more ppl in the US like trance than you think, they just dont have enough exposure to it to like it a lot. they have been turned onto the pop phenomemn with n sync and backstreet boys, and they worship them. they dont want to change and start listening to electronic music. but i bet if some bigger djs came here and turned this place around it would change a lot of peoples minds. first they would say "hey i like this we can dance to it" then they would say "wow this music is really good" and then "wow im so addicted to trance". i live near detroit, where every year they hold the electronic music festival. 1.5 million people go every year, many of them who have never heard trance or techno. they said they liked it. but thats the extent of it...then they go home and listen to rap. they dont get exposed to it enough for them to change their views about music.

Even in small countries local music is often very strong, lots of people seem to forget that .... Saying that I think the big problem with the US and Canada is that radio, TV is all big money and therefore until the big execs see Raves as a way to go nothing will really happen. Music Execs have so much power to dictate whats being played on MTV and Radio stations, so they are the ones who decide and often 'manufacture' groups/acts to make them money....
Trance's biggest obsticle in North America is funny enough, Commercialism But I think if the day comes that we see big raves, love parades here you'll definately see the raping of Trance by commercialism and money hungry factories we like to call record companies
Oh yeah, one more thing, Europeans in general if you didn't already notice speak english pretty well... So the language thing isn't that big a deal, I mean Holland has lots of music in its own language, its not that small a country! Even in Iceland 275,000 people we have a huge music scene, even some Icelanders make the world stage of music, Bjork, Gus Gus, Sigur Ros, and Christan Johanson (One of the worlds top Tennors)...
I think this is yet a nother case of American isolationist thinking ... Have you even been to Europe to be able to say there isn't much local music because of the small countries
The reason Trance does so well in Europe is because people have more say into what is played on radios and TV... Clubs in the UK have often been a source of the new music played on radio's... In europe you see all kinds of music given airplay, because its more like the people decide what they want to hear... In north America the Record Companies and Radio stations basicly tell you what to hear.. You don't get exposed to anything really new, just the same shit re-hashed over and over again.

I'm going to get blasted for this, but I don't really care cause it's how I feel. Trance is getting a bad rap in North America because of the ravers and the culture. In Europe the music is glamourous, alot of distiguished and well to do people go to expensive clubs and spending there money and having a great time.
In North America the music is associated with the "Rave" culture which consists of little raver kids wearing stupid candy coloured jewlery taking pills and smelling vicks nasal spray (it's not true, but that's what the regular consenses is amoung most of the regular clubbers)...Regular clubbers (ie: college kids and young people 19-28 like myself) look at this and see kids passed out on a dank floor all fucked on E and it just looks bad....There are some nice clubs that play trance don't get me wrong, but there are few to many....If Trance is going to make it big, then it will start in the clubs (not the raves) because raves have gotten a bad name already and nothing is going to change that.....Basically, it's still underground in North America, so there is an era of mystery around Trance, but soon as more and more people get into it and relize that it's not just for ravers and young kids doing drugs and understand the music then it will catch on.......I am in no rush though....As soon as people start supporting the clubs that play Trance and House...etc...and we see well dressed good looking people (with money) coming in and out every night of there favorite club, then the others will want to be in with that and want to be in a more glamorous scene.....Kinda like Monkey see monkey do.....Then the more people going to these clubs, the more people will be calling the radio stations *the so called "club Stations" and requesting Trance.....
I say support the clubs.....not the raves......Sorry for saying that but it's true....I enjoy a good rave but I would rather spend my time with people who have a love for the music in a nice setting...Rather then a warehouse or run down building :P
*just my 2 cents*

Well, you see, other countries are heaving their own love parades, France, Russia, South Africa , Uk to just name a few have started their own parades, there's something like it in Argentina I heard also, other massive streetparades in Norway and Holland .. thats europe and the rest of the world. But America .... its very sad, the way it functions, its just sad, America its one huge monopoly, that wants to control all !! they only want THEIR artists to be heard and be succesfull, you get to hear all the american artists wherever you in the world , but the ones from the outside, where only THE top few make it to the american market. Now, America is very varied , you have all types of music, and Pop, Rock , Alternative its whats famouse, you also have the Spanish music, since thats the spanish peeps want , but dance music , its just looked at as Club Music, you will never have a Rave, or a Live broadcast from a club on TV, if so that would be the most awesome thing !! ( for us americans ) . You ask and talk about the music, and people ARE clueless , they know nothing , all they will say is .. Trance ?!? what .. thats druggies music !!!! those are the comments you'll hear from people .. at school, I had like 27 peeps all telling me , I was tryint to explain to them , but they go like WHAT ?!?! .
Also, I was trying to talk to a friend about certain DJ's, this kids were into Hip Hop and D&B, all they knew was Diesel boy and some other D&B artists, when I mentioned PvD they just laughed at me , and they would always say that all the peeps that listen to electronic music HAS to be involved in drugs ( them included ) but I said noooo !!! no no !!! I needed someone to back me up, but I just couldnt keep discussing against 20 something peeps.. theres just too much ignoranced around, the news , the goverment, everything, exept for party goers and cluubers, who are the ones to be the more educated, but unfortunately , the ignorants are filtrating into the scene messing it up big time, b/c of this, it will be hard to make such event as LOVE PARADE, 1st of all, we would need BIG name DJ's to atract a very good amount of peeps.

Dude i totally agree with you . As long as the trance scene is associated to the rave culture and those stupid candy kids , we will have problems only . And as u said , i prefer being in a club with people who love the music instead of a bunch of candy kids

yeah...im here in the US too...and threads like this have come up several times here on TA...anyway, as sum ppl have already said, trance here is indeed greatly associated with raver kids and even drugs...i mean in many places, "trance" is almost synonymous to raves, which in turn are (to many) synonymous to drugs and messed up ppl...
another thing to keep in mind is simply the availability of music, and the friggin exposure...believe it or not, there isn't a *single* radio station in ALL of los angeles that caters to the fans of this kind of music...there was one, called "groove radio", until a few yrs. ago, but it didn't do well and had to close down...
most of the ppl. here who r into trance r willing to spend the time to seek out stores and even sites online where they can get the music...alot of ppl. who r into mainstream stuff dont have to do that, cos its all on the damn radio-hip hop, rap, r&b, soft rock, country, everything...i know sum ppl. do download stuff, but those r predominantly the younger, computer savvy folks, and their numbers aren't really all THAT significant...so yeah..theres a long way for trance to go...
peace
