What irks me about Copy Controlled CD'S

I like to think that I enjoy buying cd's (especially since they have dropped the prices). I've always liked the real thing better than the burned copies. So I bought the Chemical Brothers 2cd set today and I see copy controlled right on the cd, which I have no problem with. If EMI (company that put out the cd) wants to do that then great, they are entitled to because they own the copyright. I like to use my discman all the time to go jogging and when I have to take public transit and that's really why I buy cd's to listen to while doing things. So 4pm, I'm going jogging, which I do everyday (gotta train for that marathon i plan to run in 2005 or 2006). Anyway I take my discman with me because I enjoy listening to music. So before I leave I put cd 1 in the discman and press play and the cd won't read. It read find in my stereo and my pc but not my discman. I tried cd 2, same problem but I put another cd in my discman and it works perfectly. I mean if EMI and other big companies want to keep people who enjoy buying cd's then they need to allow us to listen to the music in our discmans or anywhere. I have no problem if I cannot copy a cd to mp3 (even tho I know many ways around it, if I wanted to copy it, which I don't). Anyone had this problem or problems with copy controlled cd's?

Yeah, I have the exact same problem with my new mp3/cd-player. The old one reads them just fine.

What I really don't understand, though, is that I can copy these "copy controlled" cd's without any kind of problems whatsoever.

So now I have to buy the cd, rip it and burn it to a blank disc if I want to play it on my discman... makes me wonder why I even buy anything anymore.

Indeed, the logic is hard to understand. If you want to discourage people from burning and downloading, surely you should make it easier for people buying music not harder.

A problem I've had is trying to rip a copy controlled cd into the catalogue for a radio station but it wouldnt read it. It just came up with its own little media player. So fuck it, I won't rip it and the artist doesnt get airplay. Way to go

I just wonder about the people who take public transportation and take the discman to listen to stuff. I guess that discourages the real cd buyers. Smart thinking on EMI's part, I sent them a nasty email saying why make the true cd buyers angry?

i agree
i take public transit everyday to school and my discman is crucial! I have a couple copy-controlled cds, but I have yet to experience the problem. Does this problem only occur if your discman plays mp3 cds as well?

It depends on the disc as well.
For example, my copy of Ferry Corsten - World Tour Washington plays just fine but Blank & Jones - Relax won't play at all.

Both are copy controlled but only 1 of them works... ???

Avoid them like the plague!

My main stereo refuses to play them, which basically means I can't listen to them unless I bypass the protection, rip them, and burn them onto a CDR.

My stereo plays them fine but it's only those 2 cd's on my discman that has the problem.

Well, maybe these discs doesn't sell under the "red-book" standard that covers the cd-audio format. They are, or at least should be labeled.

Satan (eek!) and for what?

The Copy Protection is stopping what exactly?
I mean, as long as you don't copy the disc and you rip each track seperately it's useless!
And who of us has tried to copy it only to find out it cant be copied and says, " Oh well, thats that, I tried!"
NO. Of course we then try ripping which works fine!
What a dumb industry...it seems the underground technology is always years ahead of corporate industry.
I have found CD's cheaper as well, and have purchased 3 or 4 within the last month or so... but I always rip em to my hard drive, cuz truth be told, I'm always on the computer and the sounds sytem on it BLOWS AWAY my stereo.
WAKE UP INDUSTRY!!
