They remove parts of the sound. Treble is the highs, Mid is the middle, and Bass is the low. They allow you to remove the specified part of the sound, for better mixing, effects, and so forth.

Technically, I'm not sure, but here's my best guess:Sound is a waveform, so I assume they just chop off either the high part of the wave, or the bottom. Mute it, something like that. But I'm just talking out of my ass, so if someone who actually knows how it works wants to say something...

these are the tech specs for the rane empath...
http://www.rane.com/empath.html

but they pretty much all do the same, the better mixers will have a better range at what cuts out what. the eq's are the top graph on that page.

for gain, look at the bottom graph. the gain will basically amplify the signal, think of gain as a 2nd volumn, it is there so that you can match the volumns so that the volumn sliders on each channel will be be equal in volumn (where level 5 on channel 1 will equal level 5 on channel 2).

hope that helps a bit.

Another thing:

Gain controls how much the signal is amplified.
The volume faders control how much of that signal get through.

Mids are the vocals I believe, but you can't just "cut them out" that easily. Your also taking out the mids of the rest of the song, and the vocals probably extend somewhat past just the mid band. Then again, couldn't you just throw on a record with vocals and try it yourself ?
