Athlon is made by AMD, and Pentiums are made by Intel. Intel has a fairly large hold on the computer market, and consequently are able to charge a bit more for their chips. Oh and they have exclusive deals with most computer manufacturers.
The Athlon XP is actually one of the most efficient chips out on the market right now if you're looking at clockspeed:MIPS ratios. In a general sense, Intel's chips have gotten progressively less efficient with the aforementioned ratio, while AMD's chips have gotten progressively better.
However, providing you have fast enough RAM, the Pentium 4 series of chips will provide faster bus transfers because of the Hyperthreading Technology. That is, until you start looking at the Athlon 64.
Hmm, well I suppose I could keep going on and on and on, but I don't suppose many people would truly care. To finalize: most people building their own systems go with AMD, and most people ordering their systems go with Intel.
