As some of you know, I bought Chemical Brothers 2cd (Best of the Singles) in December. Anyway it had a copy protected logo on it and I don't mind copy protected cd but it had a drawback. I jog daily and take my discman along with me and listen to cd's, while burning calories, well the cd would not play in my discman or even read. So I emailed EMI with an email saying if this was what copy protected meant that I would never buy a cd from them again. So today they sent me a non copy protected cd version. I am happy that it finally fucking plays with my discman and I am happy but they send a letter which killed my joy somewhat. So EMI says every SINGLE release will have this dreaded copy protection and I doubt they have adapted it to work on certain dismans like my SONY. Then they say if this ever happens again, I have to send proof of purchase, which I had and the disc to them (which I wanted to do it). EMI did come thru for me but they did not solve the issue because their are many like me who take their discmans to work, school and elsewhere and listen to cd's and they are pissing off their fans.

earlier this year it was found that using a felt tip marker on the cd breaks the copy protection, and another way to breakit involved using the "SHIFT" key on your comp. unless there is a new copy protection shouldn't you be able to break it using one of those methods?

Yes, so far there are two main methods of copy protection. The felt-pet marker trick is possible because a garbage data track is added onto the end of the cd. When the computer loads the disc, it tries to read the garbage data first and...well...can't. So if you black out the gargage data track then the computer will just ignore it and access the audio tracks directly.

The shift-pressing method has to do with the autoplay/autorun "feature" on most Windows boxes nowadays. When you put in the audio CD your computer would follow the automatic instructions and install drivers on your comp that fuck up any audio tracks you try to rip onto your computer. Oh, you aren't told that it's installing the drivers either. Holding down the shift key (I believe it only works on Win2k boxes and newer, although I could be wrong) stops the autorun/autoplay process and therefore prevents the drivers from being installed.

my whole post was not about copying cd's...it was being able to play them in my discman. I don't burn cd's....i just wanted something that worked in my discman and EMI fixed that problem. For most I assume it is about burning cd's to mp3's or whatever but with me it is being able to work in my discman when I go jogging. I know all about copy protection but think about the ppl who just use them for their discmans and don't give a shit about burning cd's. That was my point.

They don't give a shit if it doesnt play in a discman, the only thing running through their head is how much money they earned off you buying it

Copy protected cd's are labeled aren't they ?
And i dont think they are even selling it as a "red-book" cd-audio standard. So what we have here, are customers not knowing enough about what they are buying ?

No personal attack this, but just to get another view of this topic.

well sometimes the packaging says COPY PROTECTED, I believe but most say it on the back of the cd with a copy protected logo. Both the copy protected cd's have the logo of copy protection with all the music labels at the bottom (with the chemical brothers, there are several btw...good cd's tho). I believe people don't realize the technology's limitations because they don't seem to work in any Sony Discman. I tried 4 different ones (mine, my brothers and some friends to see if they worked). Sure Sony being the huge company that they are as one of the big 5, will be happy to learn that copy protection cd's DO NOT WORK IN THEIR DISCMANS!. Big companies have been killing the artists for yrs, buy a cd and support the artist, technically the company gets rich being bastards to the artists and then they complain about mp3's reducing their profits after they spent millions on lawyer fees suing their own customers and the customer will pay for the increase...good work cd music companies....who should already be a case study in greed and how not to stay current with what your customer wants. They were given oppt to basically own the mp3 tech. in 1996-1997 but they simply said NO.

Part of this could be part of a ploy by Sony. They have the advantage of being manufacturers of audio devices in addition to being a major music label. I'm sure any "Sony brand" copy protection would work just fine in one of their discmen for obvious reasons.

Possible solutions: Use the aformentioned methods to disable the copy protection allowing you to burn a copy of the CD you bought for use in your discman. Now I'm sure you've thought of that and this anyway.

So, another pile of bullshit is being dumped on us by record companies; suddenly stealing doesn't seem all that wrong.

then screw it, buy music from other record labels and download EMI music


it really isnt hard to copy music even if there is copy protection. If you can hear the music, you can copy the music, there aint no fuckin way that they can stop piracy, may be only deter the noobies.
