I'm needing advice and information as to which sound card deserves attention from someone who is looking to producing/editing/recording on a PC.

And therein, what software desrves the same.

audigy platinum or something like that

Yeah I got the Sound Blaster Audigy Ep. It comes with an external part that you plug into your computer which has several different kinds of inputs, optical, digital and analog i believe. It's what I use to record anyways, then I have reason for any editing. Anyone else use Reason to edit their stuff?

I would check out something from M-Audio, such as the Audiophile 2496. Should be able to find it for $149USD or cheaper fairly easy. The Audigy platinum is a decent card with a lot of features, but it can't handle recording in full 24bit 96khz quality unlike the M-Audio card. Unfortunately I can't go into much more detail than that, but it does seem to be a pretty popular entry-level pro card.

For producing Reason is a pretty good piece of software, along with Fruityloops . For straight recording Soundforge might work as well.

there are threads talking about this all over the place here. i know the sb cards are not good cards for what you want. might wanna check the producers section and ask in there for they are the ones they will prob. do the big recordings. i do know that you can get a pretty good card for the same price you would pay for the audigy.

i own an audigy 2 platinum. It sucks the chrome off a trailer hitch. DON'T BUY ONE.

M-Audio is definitely a good place to start however!

I'd recommend you'd stay away from audigy as far as possible.
certainly if you want to produce.
Take a look at the m-audio range, the terratec range and the esi-range
They all have decent soundcards for home-studios
ps : you'd get more replies posting this in producer section

a) echo (formerly event) makes some great cards, like the gina and layla.
b) m-audio, specially the delta 66 - great value. 4 balanced ins, 4 balanced outs for your analog needs and coaxial s/pdif in/out. great user interface on the PC. inexpensive, especially used.

I've been talking to an engineer I know and he also says to stray away from INTERNAL sound cards and try to get a breakout box because the internal cards have probless with electro-interference from other components inside your pc.

Is this true?

yes, some cards more than others though.

computers are big ole EMI/RFI generators.

this is why I like the M-audio Delta-66... nice compact breakout box with a quality sheilded cable between the PC and box.
