tu_face: the correct answer to your question is: they are super absorbing polymers (SAP's), but very weak ones at that, it has to be said. I've seen stronger ones, where a pinch of "salt" have made a glas of water turn into solid plastic. And I currently possess ones the size of a needle head, which, when put into water (or coke, or beer, or ...), expands to the size of a die. (lots of fun can be had with these jokers and unknowing friends!)
