Alberta internet providers.

Hey, I'm going to be moving to fort mcmurray and need to know who's good for internet out there. Apparently some of the providers of highspeed have montly caps or shut down heavy downloaders. I download LOTS and don't want someone who's going to be charging me extra or removing my service. Any advise would be welcome.

Fort McMurray is brutal. I visited friends there once... As for internet connection im not sure who runs it up there. If it is cable like shaw or rogers. The cap will be around 30 gigs a month. I went over the cap once with 52 gigs and all they did was send me a letter telling me not to do it.

I made a mistake there, there is no rogers. Apparently the cap is 5gigs/month with shaw according to their rep. We went with telus dsl because they don't have a cap. Does anyone here use telus? How are they for speed and connection stability?

I personally use Telus and have to say I've never had one problem. I've run a site out of my connection for almost a year now and have had no warnings no nothing about the amount of traffic. Speeds are good for downloading, I get a max of about 80k up and on a real fast connect i can get up near 200k for dl speed. So yes i would definately recommend it. Here are some prices for you to check out.

Shaws cap is 5 gigs... Thats a load of horseshit up there. Mine here is 30 gig. Thats so gay man. I dont believe that. You cant do anything with 5 gig.

raver4life: Thanks i'm so happy to hear that telus isn't gonna suck. As far as shaw goes, that does indeed blow. Im on norcom now out of sioux lookout ontario and the cap is 4gig. It's totally fucking insane that they could restrict you to so little. I have to pick out the very few songs i'm going to download each month.

I can believe that i am hearing this. Since when does telus not suck? Doesnt Shaw and nucleus smoke them out of the water?

Shaw is great if you enjoy low dowload limits, random service blackouts and being treated like shit.

Heres my take:
With Telus (if you're relatively close to an exchange) - you get better routing and thus better pings (ideal if you're into internet gaming, especially FPSs), as far as I know no limit on the download or upload. Upload maxes at about 55K/s, down at about 200K/s.

With Shaw - Slightly higher pings (usually 10-20 higher, sometimes 30 ms), but generally faster download speeds, comparable upload but capped I think.

Ah yes the regular battle between cable and DSL...Shaw and Telus.

Well I have always had Shaw and Dr. Cfire I have never had problems like that. Shaw will regularly update there systems between 12am and 2am occasionally and only take 5-10minutes.

I must know more about this 30gig cap that you talk of because I have exceeded that limit several times. I also hear that Telus limits your speeds to 1.5Mbps.

Shaw --> lots of people connected = slow speeds
Telus --> far away from exchange = slow speeds
