The Difference In Quality Between Trance From 1997/8/9 And Now.....Why?
After listening to all my old oakey, tiesto and pete tong sets from 'back in the day' it struck me more than before just how much more better quality the trance productions were of the late 1990's.especially 1999.
The productions seem to be far more anthemic, varied and memorable compared to nowadays output.
But why is this? personally i think its due to over production maybe.artists priding (sp?) themselves in technical ability and so dilutes the tune in general.thats just my interpretation lol.
Anyone else have an opinion on this?
Cheers
(This thread was inspired by the Paul Oakenfold set live from gatecrasher at lotherton hall, essential mix 1999)

Trance is new , trance gets older , trance gets more of the same , etc
It's a process that every style of music goes true , people will always say rock was used to be better and so on.

that's the truth man
But i personally don't get it. i can't stand 99% 50's and most of the 60's music. and as for trance, i think the stuff in '99 is a little weak for my taste. i prefer trance today. but don't get me wrong, there are some of my all-time favorite tunes like seven cities, synaesthesia, and another way from back in the day which i still love.
btw... '99 trance is better then new trance thread #74632

I recon it's because it used to be about composition not just making up layers and taking them away (you know a beat, a hook, take away beat for a bit that'll do for a brakedown). I think thats why Mr Dresden & Mr Gabrial are doing so well. Their songs arn't just formulaic layering, they are composed and have variation. Not just a beat a hook and small variations on each.

i reakon the quality of production has increased hugely and is much more innovative than the 99 trance, even tho the hook's of the 99 stuff were extremely addictive.
i feel now that there is a big void between soft arminy trance and harder dance that the 99 style was all about, epic at its popular peak. the epic seems to have all but died away of recent, only leaving a somewhat softer effort all round, especially as many producers cater to the asot kind of vibe. having said that, many of the well known hard trance producers have either gave up or have started producing hard dance or hard house. or is this just a lapse inbetween the proper trance scene of 03 transferring to the 04 season. i hope so.
Deejays picked better tracks, had better tracks to pick from. Vocals are a lost art these days because most of the vocal stuff is pure crap but back then, OMG!. I don't think it will be equalled in any sense but it was a fun period of time because certain deejays were at the top of their game.

I think the trance was as good then as now. The variety is what was different. Every single dj's set's weren't as similar then as they are now. Seems that every big dj plays the same 20 or 30 record in a different order now. It makes the great songs boring much more quickly.

a lot of you guys don't realize, That trance has been around since 1992, I been listening to it ever seen and been hearing it evolved over the years, Back then, Trance was a bit experimental in its beginings.
