I'm in a dorm room, and can't bring my speaker setup from home. I'm trying to get a decent pair of speakers at a cheap price. I have a question though...do you NEED an amp , or are there such things as speakers that get hooked right up to your mixer.....through RCA cables or something...I was looking at a pair of Numark amplified speakers with RCA connections....will that get connected right into my mixer...or does it need a reciever?
there are 'powered' monitors or speakers that can plug in directly to your signal, your mixer in this case. so yes, they are out there if you want them.

For a dorm i would go with powered speakers. The budget will let us know what type you will be able to buy.

i live in a dorm as well, and personally i think its better to get nice speakers for your computer. i have my mixer hooked up to my soudncard and i have a 5.1 Boston system for my computer. the sound is great and its easy to record sets, stream live for internet radio, etc.

i would recommend an amp/receiver no matter what.
Im not a pro on this subject but why you would amp powered speakers. Are the amps generaly weaker if there included in the speaker? I was curious because I was considering some. Im in a similar situation as zizack, Im just looking for something for my room. Also what about monitors vs regular speakers?

I don#t have a computer in my room to go through. The cheapest combo with an amp and a speaker is like £215 which is a lot to spend on speakers for a few months. I guess powered speakers are the way to go then.
do I need to buy any special cables or anything....or do RCAs work fine coming out of my mixer to the speakers...thanks
