SEX!!! so yea you got your puller now (im not suggesting stripers or anything) but do this make it cheaper for females (or even free) then tell all the guys that their will be a shibload of females their. If you can stick a few naked chicks with headphones on the flyer to get their hormones going. As for females youv allready decressed the price. And females are usually more willing to experament with trance so chances are thell go.....well at least thats my reasoning. hope i h helped

they are killing you if you cannot advertise drink specials. there are a few tricks to use those.

but other than that try the sex thing. You really need sociable chicks there. Maybe some good hot friends would be go-=go dancers that flirt with the crowd.

a party atmosphere is contageous, so a few party animals will surely get people moving, then word will spread like [insert rude female comment]

I've been giving extremely serious consideration to teaming up with a few people and starting up a trance night in my hometown.

We have a large number of electronic nights (mostly house), but somehow we've managed to go without a regular trance night locally for years...

In my experience of djing and promoting, trance doesnt go down too well on student nights- especially given the state of the current music scene over here....

If the girls dont know it they wont dance to it, therefore the blokes cant perve/pull

The most successful stuff to play on student nights is party stuff- past and present. dance is becoming more popular again- the amount of dance promos im being sent at the mo is showing how much ite being pushed and how much r&b is falling out of favour- but you still have to be carfeful.

A few tricks i have used and some others would be:

-Foam party- hire a foam machine- students go absolutely nuts for this, but the venue might not be too keen oin this as they are so messy and can cause a fair bit of damage to the floor. Fits in with the trance scene very well

-fancy dress

-traffic light night (wear a coloured badge displaying your 'up for it' status green/amber/red)


Personally i would do (and have done) an ibiza night with a foam party, skimpy dressed dancers....and play loadsa ibiza dance classics- thats your best bet...maybe tie in with a beach theme (fancy dress- although getting girls to go out in bikinis at this time of year will be hard) This should have a broader appeal than just a trance night with no gimmick

You can have the best promotion in the world, but if the venue isnt right or the people just arent up for that type of night then you may have problems

I think Freak hit it on the money.

While I have played a couple of student union bashes the general theme with students is more live music based at the moment.

Sex does indeed sell but if you make it too sleezy it may backfire on you. Especially with students as a lot seem to be very PC concious these days... (God I sound old when I say that ).
Sex appeal is a good point though, one of the most popular nights in Brighton is 'Seven Sins' so you get the general idea. Suggestive but not blatant.

I still think the general party theme will work better. Also I would suggest to start the night really funky and lull the people into the trance. If it's full on you will most likely get people leaving. Let them get drunk first then hit them.
Also remember student crowds are more alcohol based so will definately be up for it but will run out of energy pretty quick so your music selection will have to reflect that. (Such is the nature of alcohol).

Nightclubs in Italy always have free entry for the ladies. It guarantees a good quantity of females and an equal amount of puppy eyed males. In this country you may get a few protests from both men and women, again PC rears it's ugly head.

Without knowing the venue it's hard to say what could work.

However, if the venue is going under but wont do drinks promos then it's pretty small minded management to say the least. Talk about digging your own grave.

Another thing to look at is what are you competing with at the moment? What is there locally that the students are doing if they are not going to this place? They are still drinking/partying because that's something all students do to a greater or lesser degree. If you are going to have a successful night you have to find out what you are competing against, then use that to try and do what they are doing but better.

Whilst I understand your desire to have a pure trance event I would say that you may have to compromise a little here. Huge Ibiza anthems are a plus.

Go with the Ibiza theme... (Nem likes Ibiza... what he can remember of it )
The sort of stuff I would start the evening off with is as follows (And yes some of you will be cringing at the thought of some of these tracks):

In no particular order and also other records in between.

Spiller Groove Jet (guaranteed to get the girlies dancing.
Any/all of the major tracks from the first Basement Jaxx album.
Roger Sanchez
Tori Amos - Proffesional Widow (Van Helden's remix)
Star 69 - Fatboy slim (You will be surprised at the reaction this gets.)

Later in the night throw in your
Cafe Del Mar - Energy 52
Greece 2000
Flaming June
Ayla
Born Slippy

Etc... These will act as a good lead into a trance finale.

Think more 'good time' than trainspotting trance night.

Without knowing what the general interest for trance is at the moment at your uni this may be a safer option. Above all you really want to make the night work. Who knows... you may get a repeat offer.

I'm with you visje, R&B falling out of favour can never be a bad thing. R Kelly 'Ignition' has to be about the worst song ever written.

Around my college, trance really isn't regarded highly, so you have to go mainstream if you want to grab their interest.

i think ikronix is very right, and not to be judgemental or anything, but freak, you live in england, i dont think r & b originated there. and honestly whether you believe it or not, there are TONS of good r & b / hip hop artists in america who are only progressively increasing. the whole genre is only getting bigger, not falling off. the stuff you hear on the radio and see on the t.v. does not well represent that genre and actually sorta degrades it because it makes a lot of people who are not familiar with it think hip hop is all about that wack shit. i live in nyc which has one of the best underground hiphop/r&b scenes and have seen lots of amazing artists perform. my first love, however, will always be trance. becuz.... thats just the way it is!!!

Im a Hip/hop r&B dj as well as a dance dj....i have a proper urban night- not just the commercial stuff- which is the stuff i meant was falling out of favour...
The charts and clubs have been totally saturated over here with it- there has been far too much released now, and people are getting sick of it. Its going back underground how i like it, and dance is becoming more popular again...
