Help with speakers/amplifier

I need a pair of speakers + amplifier that is quality enough for home mixing, but also powerfurl/durable enough for medium sized house parties that I would spin at (about 40 people in a large room).

My budget for this is $300, but I can go as high as $400 if I need to. Suggestions?

For this price I bought a pair of Tannoy Reveal monitors (220 €) and one Akyiama amplifier for 110 €.
I can't tell you if this stuff runs cos' I bought it last week and I haven't used it yet.

hate to be a pesimist, but good luck finding (good) speakers AND an amp for that little money.

good speakers get expensive. quickly.

if your planning to use them for parties, monitors are out of the question. you want good portable 2-way PA speakers.

I'm not sure what kind of quality your looking for. but, if you want good speakers, consider something from JBL, mackie, yorkville, or electrovoice. those are my favs when it comes to speakers.

you could consider something used if you want to save some money - good speakers last a decently long time if they aren't pushed and are properly taken care of (kept out of the rain, not physically broken, etc). I picked up a yorkville ex350 (12 inch 2-way PA cab) as a monitor speaker a few months back, from eBay. I paid $96, including shipping. it's old (about 10 years) and weighs 60lb, but both drivers are in great condition and it sounds nice. the cabinet could use new carpet and the grille could use a paint job, but that doesnt change the sound

JBL eon's and the similar plastic speakers (mackie srm450 powered, mackie c300 non-powered, crest lq12/lq15 non-powered) are a dream when it comes to houseparties. good quality lightweight speakers, perfect for mobile DJ'ing like houseparties. but they are expensive. powered eon's cost ~600 new, each. the powered mackies are almost 700, each. the mackie c300 non-powered run about 400 each, and the crest lq series are also about 400 each.

here are three 15" 2-way PA speakers that are currently in production, that fall in the lower end of the price bracket.. but are still quality cabinets made by quality manufacturers...

a) yorkville y115 (~500$/set) - I've heard these at a houseparty before. they are good speakers!
b) electrovoice force i (~550$/set) - I've heard the force i mains, they definitly sound good. I personally own a force i monitor speaker (the little 29lb one) and it does very well for it's size.
c) jbl sound factor series (sf15, specifically) (~450/set) - Not much personal experience, but these cabs are getting popular and are priced right. for a JBL cab with all JBL drivers, it's a good value.

those are the three closest to your needs and price range.

bottom line: good speakers are expensive. you need PA cabinets, not monitors or consumer "stereo" speakers (dont waste your $$ on consumer equiptment) - buy used if you cant afford new, just be careful you dont get something thats in bad shape.
