has anyone realised this track is actually a complete rip-off of Kayashi- Furio (released in 1997 on Incentive Records)?

no not really. Cos even that version was a remake of the theme tune from the film Merry xmas mr lawrence, which is where the melody comes from

Hmm...I didn't know that. I like the song, though. Isn't watergate = an alias of DJ Quicksilver?

The original track is Ryuichi Sakamoto - Forbidden Colours and it's vocal version , if i remember correctly, is known as Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence from the 1983 movie with the same title. The movie is starred and music composed by Sakamoto as well.
DJ Quicksilver = Orhan Terzi (the visible part of the team) and Tommaso de Donatis
Watergate = Orhan Terzi, Tommaso de Donatis & David Haid

It's the other way around
Vocal: Ryuichi Sakamoto & David Sylvian - Forbidden Colours
Intstrumental: Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence
The trio version from his "1996" album is very nice - features Sakamoto himself on the piano accompanied with the violin and cello.
There's also a piano solo version played again by Sakamoto [from the "Coda album].
Funny enough, Sakamoto did compose a song called "Heart of Asia" in the 80's which sounds totally different to MCML.

I thought Hemstock & Jennings were somehow involved with Watergate as well?

They made a new remix for the double vinyl Postiva aniversary re-release of the track.

Isn't it a ripoff off from some traditional oriental melody that's hundreds of years old?
I don't know about you guys, buy when i heard it, i thought it sounded just like all those traditional oriental strings.....
My guess is, that's where the inspiration for it came from.

I wouldn't call any one track a "complete ripoff" of any other. Sure, artists feed on one another's originality... but it's not exactly easy to come up with something completely original that's never been before in one form or another, let alone something that people are going to want to hear.
