I wanted to find a visualization program that works with LIVE music. I have found some really cheapy ones.... What would be perfect is something that can play the winamp 5 visualization plugins with live music. Is Winamp capable of this? Is there some other program that can use these files?

wow i had always wanted to do this too...hook up my mixer to my computer and while i'm spinning have those visualizations on the screen. that'd be hot.
you can actually use winamp. it has this built in plugin called lineinput or something like that. I've seen it done at a house party i spun at.

That's exactly what I was looking for, but I have no idea how to set that up or use it. The effects that it creates are amazing and would really add to any house party or club setting. There has to be someone here who knows the proper way to set up winamp to use a line input for its visualization plugins.

Steps:
1. Download the LineIn plugin for Winamp 2/5 here.
2. Plug your mixer output into the line-in jack of your sound card.
3. Start Winamp.
4. Select ADD URL in the playlist window. Add the URL "line://srate=48000,numbuffers=5000,bufsize=s576,title=High Quality (VIS),hideformat" (without the quotation marks)
5. Press Play.
6. Start the Winamp visualization of your choice.
7. Start spinning!

Apparently it doesn't work...that's what I get for not actually trying it. However, a lot of Winamp plugins like G-Force and R4 can run in standalone mode in addition to running as Winamp plugins. I just tried running R4 in standalone mode while my mixer was plugged into my laptop's line-in jack, and it detects the line-in signal automatically and visualizes it.

Look on winamp.com, there's a line in plugin that would make las3r's idea work.

Laserjock, you're still a genius - sorta.... I got it to work using what you said. I dowloaded the program, installed it, and then in WinAmp 5 opened the URL line you gave us. It plays it. What I then had to do was turn off the line in volume because I was getting a double dose of the music. The visualizations work perfectly with it.
One problem - It is buffered with about a 2 second delay. The record is nearly 2 seconds ahead of the music being visualized and coming over the computer speakers. I don't think you can get rid of that either. Got any ideas? It's almost working.....

I'm sure you can look into the buffer settings in Winamp and just turn the buffer way down.

Also, you may need to turn down the resolution of the vis plugin for fullscreen... the Winamp vis plugins are *really really* processor hungry - i can't run anything higher really than (i think) 640 x 480 x 16bit on an Athlon XP1800 with 256 meg without really slow framerates.
