So what did we think of Insomnia?

Well, good party, to tell you the truth I only went to this party for 2 reasons... Marco V and DJ Scot Project.

Marco V.... Awesome set! Unlike his usual tech-trance sets I've heard before (not live),but it was great to hear him thorw out tunes like Kid Vicious - Proceed. But I almost blew my load when I heard him drop Push - Strange World. Great set, great mixing... too bad he had to play to a crowd where I think almost no one there even knew who the fuck he was! It's great to go to parties like this, but come on, Marco V should be playing to an Insomnia sized crowd to people who come to see Marco V! It's kinda dissappointing to see that not everyone was there for him and his music. It seems that just as many people would show up if there were a bunch of no names just so they can hear something they can get fucked up too, with a beat!

Sorry, a little venting.

DJ Scot Project... just what I expected, plus a little more. I was thinking to hear the typical Scot Project sound, but the man played beautifully with some absolute devastating basslines and buildups. I just don't understand why you want to have DJ Scot Project on from 4-6am. With the music this guy plays, he should have been on before Marco V to get some energy going. Having him on so late... you can't pound everyone into the ground until 6am. People are getting tired and clearing out.

I've said it before and I'm going to say it again... something has to be done about the sound and the acoustics in the Plaza of Nations. The only place you could hear everything the DJ's were dropping was right infront of the speakers in the Front! Starting at the back of the room, it was pretty quite and echoeing. The only place you could distinctly hear the high hats and pounding bass were the main front speakers too. If you guys want soem help with containing the music in there... let me know, got tons of ideas to get some better sound quality in there. The other rooms were great though, especially in the theatre!

Well, that's all. I think I may have to be done with these all ages events though. Never have I seen so many little 15-16 year old girls wearing shorts that barely cover their asses. Not that I mind looking... but for some one whose a bit older, it sure is hard not to feel guilty. And on that note... that's one more reason to bring these top DJ's to the clubs, and not just the parties!

As long as you had fun, that's all that matters. Sorry to hear that the crowed was not there for the music, and that many were there to drop drugs and get f***ed out of their minds. So what did everyone else think of this party? It was on the 20th and I see hardly any reviews of this one.

Yeah, i heard from someone that a lot of people were doing some pretty raunchy stuff for a classy event like Marco V. And lots of people were fcked out of their minds on what have you. That's just not right. They give Vancouver fans and trance lovers a bad name. If they want to do drugs and get wasted and dry hump and stuff like that, there are other places to do it. If that's all people do at events, the DJs might not want to come back. They ruin it for all the music lovers out there.

Then again I didn't go so I don't know what really went down, I'm sure there will still tonnes of great times to be had and I know Marco can rock. I bet even Ricky H (if he played) had a great time along with all the other DJs and I'm sure TAs and everyone else still had fun!

Marco V was the man of the night. Amazing set... bascily heard every track that i wanted him to play... and it was very similar to what i was expecting (as i did listen to live sets from sensation white 2003 and a 3 hr set in atlanta in earlier of 2003)... and i loved and danced every minute of it. At the end of his set i got a chance to talk to him on his way out and have my cd signed... my question "how did you do it? play netherlands friday night and west coast canada saturday night... just amazing."... his answer "i just love to dj"... and that was certinaly something you could see on his face durring his entire set.

Stanton Warriors was the other highlight of the night... their Dj\PA Set was amazing. Basicly take a stanton warriors dj set... and add live remixing on the fly on top. Real crazy stuff... and such great tunes played.

Sound in the main room was the big downer of the night (among the overly drugged people, including 2 od's i witnessed being attended to). They really didn't test the sound system very well before starting the show... the delays were big issues... the levels were inconsistant... and i heard there was monitor issues for the djs too. Just horiable. And the lighting setup was nothing to go home about espicaly since Solid was ranting and raving how awesome it was going to be.

But I agree with the comment about these types of DJs should be for club nights... I certinaly would love to see Marco back for a club night event... I'd do everything to get my butt off the Island for that show.

I had fun. I think in the end I got my $40 worth. I was there entirely for the music, and to that end I wasn't disappointed. Marco V and Scot Project fucking KICKED ASS. I preferred Marco's set, more good tunes on there IMO, more of a diverse sound (he played Dréas - Havannah ) and a lot of quality tracks in there. I went nuts when he dropped Godd. Scot Project played well but pretty much all of his tunes sounded the same, not enough variety. The other DJs did a pretty good job too. The best set of the night, IMO, came from Vlado. Amazing mixing, amazing track selection and flow, he reads the crowd really well and jumping around behind the decks only adds to the energy I can't believe that he only got an hour of set time whereas the Shit Brothers (I mean Shy Brothers) got two All they played was really cheesy hardhouse crap, so I spent pretty much their entire set in the progressive chillout room watching fucked-up 15 year olds dry hump. GROSS.

I do have a few complaints, like everybody else...I spent almost all of my time at the back of the main room, cause the front floor was just too damn packed for me to even get onto it. The sound wasn't really that great all the time, it was really annoying when the levels suddenly dropped off when Marco started his set. You'd think that the technicians wiring such a massive event wouldn't make such a stupid mistake I was wearing earplugs so I was able to dance very close to the speakers in the back of the room, so for me the sound was pretty thumpin and loud and didn't hurt my ears. The lighting was pretty nice, as someone already said nothing to write home about. Nowhere near as good as Aria or Stereo Also, the Plaza is too damn big...there is no vibe there, really. At times I found it really hard to get into the groove and feel the music, just because there were too many fucked up people and not really enough energy. Pretty sketchy crowd, a lot of hot looking pacifier-sucking high schoolers though . As I expected, there were WAY too many wasted people there. I've never seen so many people so fucked up in one place. My last complaint is that the bathroom is too fucking small. Every time I had to take a pee there was always a fucking lineup, for the men's room. A venue that huge and there's only one men's bathroom which can service only five people at a time. Unbelievable!

Apart from all that, though, the music was good, visuals were pretty good, the Plaza is a nice (if too big) venue, the lineup outside was OK (only about a half hour), no troubles with security or whatever, great music for the most part. I had a fun time.

I came down for a Vancouver party once and I must admit... the vibe is sketchy and there are a lot of youngin' OD'ing for really really messed up.
Parties around the whole world are like that I suppose but, to feel the energy was tough. I felt out of place and bunk for the whole party.

I really like rave-scene here in Calgary. The energy is wicked and its not toooo big.
A big party here is about 4ooo people... thats about good because it gives us room to dance, yet there is a lot of energetic people.

Vancouver's scene is a wierd one because it relies on the pill poppin ppl to keep it alive, whether they are young teeny boppers or old Vietnamese parents. They make up atleast half the crowd, so unless u can other ppl to get income from, thats the way its gonna be, cuz there really isn't a huge amount of support for electronic music in comparison to that stuff they play on the radio.

yeah, I agree with what you say completely. Also, as I said earlier, I think techno parties are really about the vibe. So if the vibe is amazing then that makes about 90% of the fun.

Overall i had a great time
but if Marco V and Scot Werent playing.... then that would be one fucked up night
its not that i am a racist, but for fucks sakes man, i look around, fuckin all the way around, and guess what, i see maybe 2-3 white people, and the rest u know...
also, i saw atleast 10 , 50 or 60 year old asains fucked up on E, and fuckin annoys me, cus if u wanna hug someone and just trip out, dont stand in the fuckin front of mainstage....
I actually thought that Vlado's set was pretty good, the guy before him had some problems with the sound, skipping and shit.
I really liked Mike's set (Shy Brothers), maybe cus of the fact i just met him, but it was a good set.
When Marco came on, he started off slow just like he told me he will and then when he dropped Loops N Things, thats when i went fuckin CRAZY, and i was pretty sober, u dont need fuckin E to have a good time people, its marco fuckin V.
Scots set was bangin hardtrance with a new mix of FM
just like someone said before, 4 am, i was pretty fuckin exhausted when Scot came up, i barelly fuckin managed to stay on my feet.
Hopefully at twisted, they dont put Above & Beyond or Armin at fuckin 4 am cus that will fuck me up.
That was a good party, just cus of the music, the crowd is the fuckin worst i ever seen in my fuckin life, there should be a race limit.... i mean a vancouver party with 80 % non- white people...
i mean, wtf do 60 year old asian people have to do with Marco V ???
PS: Marco V didnt play sensation 2003, he played 2002, he told me that he doesnt want to play the same event every year, cus whe people think of the event they think that Marco would be there... he also told me that this year, we should expect surprises at Sensation, he said that no one that played before, would be there this year.... sounds good to me.
he was probably more exhausted than any of us were, flew in at 6 after a 12 hour flight.... slept a bit at the hotel and had to be at the airport by 8... stupid US costums...
anyway, i give this party a 7.5/10
theres plenty of room for imrprovement

"Race limit"?

I know you're not racist but that IS a fairly racist statement. You have to accept the fact that this is a very Asian city and a lot of people, white and not, go to these events to get fucked up out of their minds...nothing you can do about that. Most of the people at raves don't give a fuck who the headliner is or care about the music, they're just there to get wasted. That's just how it goes here. Either accept that or don't go at all...I just ignore all the tripped-out people and try to have a good time.
