Suppose your first tune in a set contains a huge build-up. Is this wrong? I once heard a professional laugh at this, but some DJ's like Kimball Collins do it.

Also what if the set is intended for home listening, rather than a club?

i think there are too many factors to determine what kind of tune you should play. is it for home listening? is it being played to a crowd? what kind of crowd? have you just taken over from another dj or is this the first set? etc. etc.
personally, i like to start a set fairly progressively, but only for one or two tunes, then bring in the big ones, but thats when i make tapes for home listening. if i was doing a set in a club i would probably start with omething fairly banging, leave the build ups til a bit later, thats me anyway.

The Creation of a set determines who u are or what u feel at the moment ...... if u want to start off with a huge bang ..then go for it .... u should play the sets the way u feel it sounds right there is no wrong or right way ...just more people get involved if you feel the crowd and play the crowd..but set is pretty much a signature of ur personality and how u want to feel at the moment

uless it's the middle of the night, then some good hard bangin tunes are in need
one i like to start my tapes off with is Gaia - 4 elements (extened mix)
PvD used this one once, and i thought is was a stroke of geneius(sp?)

how I start a set, depends on my mood.... I usualy start with hard banging tracks like DJ Scot Project - Overdrive or DJ Simple - The Judgement day, and then go to the hit tracks....... or progressive like Energy Pump - Adrenalin Mix........ or anything else...... I don't know. it depends on my mood, my crowd, the place, time of day............ it depends on alot of things...... sometimes I just get to a set and play whatever the fuck I want!!!!!!

That's funny because I heard Paul Oakenfold end with that song here in Atlanta! Anyway, when i make mixes on my comp, I like to start with something that has a nice intro like 'Ayla - Angelfalls (Waterfall Mix)' or 'Tekara - Breathe In You (Tekara's Mix)'- I know both of those have buildups.

i think it depends....
but my personal taste would be more of progressive and slower and higher the pitch as u go and then drop the uplifting and harder tracks...but thats just me..everyone has their own taste..

If you want my opinion it all depends on 3 main factors:

1. What slot you have (if your the opening Dj you probally don't wanna start with a bang cause no one in the club yet)

2. How did the last guy finish (if the Dj your mixing into finished on a real high note and really got the crowd going you wann try and maintain that energy)

3. If your gonna start big ya better be able to deliver for the rest of the set.

Just my 2 cents.

I would say to let your mood and the mood of the room be your guide.
If you the first DJ to come on (providing you're playing in a club) then there's absolutely nothing wrong with opening with something like that. But...if you're taking over for another DJ and the energy is high..I would try and keep the energy high.
