well the problem with split cue is that you may face some mixers that don't have this feature and you may not be able to adapt smoothly to the circumstances. most mixers do have some sort of PFL/master knob mixer for you to have a little of both tracks on the headphones if you want to, but the old school way is still the best way IMO (one ear on one PFL one ear on the monitor). That way you'll mix on nearly every mixer around lol. it may take more time for you to get used to it though. well there is no correct way, but you should be aware that this method will prolly be the best. If you encounter bad monitors, well you prolly have a mixer with split-cue or PFL/master mixer, it can't be everything against you at the same time 
Try to get used to different methods, not only mixing will be more challengeable but also you'll be able to become a more versatile DJ
