I was just wondering whether there is a correct way to cue tracks up. I mostly use the split cue function because my speakers never seem to get loud enough and i can hear best in the headphones. however since i've never played in a club, how do most of the more experienced cue their tracks up... dunno is split cueing is really necessary.

well the problem with split cue is that you may face some mixers that don't have this feature and you may not be able to adapt smoothly to the circumstances. most mixers do have some sort of PFL/master knob mixer for you to have a little of both tracks on the headphones if you want to, but the old school way is still the best way IMO (one ear on one PFL one ear on the monitor). That way you'll mix on nearly every mixer around lol. it may take more time for you to get used to it though. well there is no correct way, but you should be aware that this method will prolly be the best. If you encounter bad monitors, well you prolly have a mixer with split-cue or PFL/master mixer, it can't be everything against you at the same time
Try to get used to different methods, not only mixing will be more challengeable but also you'll be able to become a more versatile DJ

No such thing as the right way. Just do whatever works best for you. Some clubs will have split-cue, some won't, depends on where you play at. I use a combination of both methods when I mix.

yeh as long as u learn both your set. makes no difference at all in the long run

I would suggest that you learn to mix well with stereo (overlay?) mixing (or whatever the technical term for it is), because as others on this thread are pointing out, many clubs often have mixers that don't have split-channel cueing mode.

I learned this lesson pretty quickly after my first liveset in December, and have since focused almost exclusively on mixing without using the split-cue option on my mixer.

most clubs these days do have split cues. but its best to make sure u know how to use one ear for headphone , one ear for speaker(monitor), always be prepared for the worst.
