Ok a friend of mine asked me this question the other day but i didn't know to answer since i didn't know myself.

Well when he wants to record from his TT to his comp, the sound quality just seems low.. it says its 192k or 320k or something.. but i dunno, it just doesn't sound clear. Now the stereo he is runnin the TTs off is a Sony 3200 PMPO hifi.. now normally when u listen to a normal cd or play TTs on this hifi, it's not clear. I mean theres like way too much bass and everything is very hard to hear.

Now he has another stereo which is heaps older, now when he connects the TTs to that, its perfect quality BUT the back of the hifi only has a Midi In.. and no Midi Out, so he cant relay the TTs to the comp and actually record it.

I want to know, is it really due to the Hifi.. or could it be something else.

also since the hifi has a Midi In only... is there some kind of device out there that can make it have both Midi in and out??

What is he using to record? You have to fine tune your input settings to get it to sound right when recording (line in adjustment in windows mixer). Sounds like he may not have the TT hooked up in the phono in on the HIFI. Soundforge works great for recording, if thats what your using, I haven't used anything else but that proggy. Check the connections, thats probably it.

First, I don't know what the hell you are jabbering about MIDI in/out. A normal stereo does not have MIDI.

I disagree that the problem is that he is not using a phono stage in the Sony hi-fi. If you are not using the phono stage it will sound like ASS way worse than some mp3. Because you say the stereo sounds bad on any source (like CD) then the stereo is probably just cheap and of poor quality.

If you are trying to record from your TT to your comp, you can cut the stereo out of the loop and just connect the mixer to the computer. This should sound good provided you have a decent sound card and you tweak the settings so you don't clip. If he does not have a mixer I would try and find a better amp.

Could you explain better why you can't just use the older amp?

yeh i think Midi in/out is another name for Phono In/out here.

First this old amp has a midi in left/right.. which means it can run any sound off it, say its the TV or the Turntable. BUT the new stereo has both Midi In and Out. I leave the TTs and speakers in the Midi In.. But then connect the cord to the PC and attach to the Midi Out so it plays in the computer. Now the other weird thing is that i tried putting the cord in the sound port in the pc and only runs decent out from the Mircophone slot. I use Sound Forge to then record it but just sounds awful.

I dunno if theres another way to go about it.. but since the old amp has no midi out.. i cant stream to the Pc to actually record it.

btw this new hifi is not cheap... it's a very powerful system, just has too much bass.

at first i told him it sounded good, then he put a Mp3 file on for me.. and i just noticed a massive amount of quality in the mp3 compared to the recorded file.

I have no idea what to do for him, tho he just bought this stereo... so its pretty new.

Do you have a mixer?

Why can't you connect the record out of the mixer to the PC (or you could use Booth-out or the Main output if that is all you have)?

Do not use the MIC input on the soundcard, you want to use the "line-in" port. Be sure to tell the recording program to record from that port and not the MIC.

MIDI stands for musical instrument digital interface. its not the same thing as a phono input or line level input. as for your recording trouble, i dont know. sorry dude

yeh he has a mixer, so i should try connected straight to the PC?? ok, ill make him try that. Also wouldn't that mean that the TTs will only run off the Speakers of the PC, making it harder.

about the MIC port, well i tried all the ports, one port made a sound other than the MIC one, but it was verry low in volume, so i tried all holes then all of a sudden the MIC port shows nice volume but bad quality.

I'll try connecting the mixer to the PC and see how it goes.

btw how do i make Sound Forge or my comp read from the other ports other than the MIC one?

In the Windows Sound Control Panel you should be able to select a "recording source". Set this to line-in then plug it into each port until you get a sound The quality should be much better. Be sure to adjust the recording volume so that it never clips (goes into the red on the recording program). You can change the volume either in the Sound control panel (recording volume) or with the mixer's gains.

Most mixers have at least 2 pairs of RCA outputs. One is labeled Master Out and usually that is hooked up to your hi-fi amp or to your speakers if they are powered. The other one is labeled Record Out you can hook this directly up to your computer. If you do this your quality should be very solid. Once you have it hooked up like this the only way you will be able to improve quality any more will be better needles, better sound card, better cables/adapters, or better mixer (only if you have a shitty one).

PS - I wonder why you have a MIDI port on your stereo amps, that seems weird to me but whatever
